The Fredericksburg Nationals, affectionately known as the FredNats, are one of the fastest-rising franchises in Minor League Baseball and serve as the Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Since arriving in Virginia in 2020, the club has become an important stop in the Nationals’ player development pipeline while bringing exciting professional baseball to the Fredericksburg region.
The franchise traces its roots to the Potomac Nationals, a team that spent more than four decades in Northern Virginia after relocating from the Carolina League’s Alexandria Dukes. In 2018, ownership announced plans to move the organization to Fredericksburg, where a new era of baseball would begin. Construction delays and the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the debut until 2021, when the Fredericksburg Nationals officially took the field at the brand-new Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Celebrate Virginia South.
As the Nationals’ Single-A affiliate, the FredNats play a critical role in developing the organization’s future stars. Every season, top draft picks, international prospects, and rising young talent begin their professional journeys in Fredericksburg before climbing the minor league ladder toward Washington, D.C. Fans have the opportunity to watch tomorrow’s Major League players during the earliest stages of their careers.
The club competes in the Carolina League, where it has quickly established itself as one of the league’s premier organizations. With a modern ballpark, energetic atmosphere, creative promotions, and a passionate fan base, the FredNats have become one of the Mid-Atlantic’s top destinations for family-friendly baseball.
Virginia Credit Union Stadium features state-of-the-art amenities while maintaining the intimate feel that makes Minor League Baseball special. From themed nights and fireworks to community events and youth programs, the Fredericksburg Nationals have built strong ties throughout the Fredericksburg region while helping grow the game across Virginia.
The FredNats continue the proud tradition of Washington Nationals player development. Every season offers fans the chance to see future Major League contributors before they reach Nationals Park, making Fredericksburg one of the most exciting places to follow the organization’s next generation of talent.
