The Frederick Keys are one of Maryland’s most recognizable and successful Minor League Baseball franchises, serving as a vital part of the Baltimore Orioles’ player development system while providing generations of fans with affordable, family-friendly baseball in the heart of Frederick.

Founded in 1989, the Keys were established when the Orioles relocated their Class A affiliate from Hagerstown to Frederick. The team was named after Francis Scott Key, the Frederick County native who wrote The Star-Spangled Banner, giving the franchise a uniquely Maryland identity that has remained a source of pride for fans ever since.

The Keys played as the Orioles’ High-A affiliate in the Carolina League from 1989 through 2020, becoming one of the organization’s most important developmental stops. During that time, the franchise captured four league championships (1990, 2005, 2007, and 2011) while consistently producing future Major League talent.

Thousands of Orioles fans watched future stars develop in Frederick before reaching Camden Yards. Notable alumni include Manny Machado, Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts, Mike Yastrzemski, Matt Wieters, Zack Britton, Jonathan Schoop, Dylan Bundy, and many more who went on to successful professional careers. The Keys have long been considered one of the premier stops in Baltimore’s farm system, helping shape generations of Orioles players.

Following Major League Baseball’s reorganization of the minor leagues after the 2020 season, Frederick temporarily lost its affiliated status and became a member of the MLB Draft League from 2021 through 2025. While the level of play changed, the franchise remained an important destination for baseball fans and a showcase for collegiate prospects hoping to hear their names called in the MLB Draft.

In 2026, affiliated baseball triumphantly returned to Frederick as the Keys once again became the High-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, this time competing in the South Atlantic League. The return restored one of Maryland’s strongest baseball traditions and renewed the direct connection between Orioles fans and the organization’s rising prospects.

The team calls Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium home, a ballpark that has welcomed millions of fans since opening in 1990. Located just across the street from Francis Scott Key’s final resting place, the stadium has become one of Maryland’s classic summer destinations. Fans proudly participate in the team’s signature tradition of “Shake Your Keys,” jingling their keys during games in support of the hometown club.

Today, the Frederick Keys continue to represent the future of Orioles baseball while honoring more than three decades of Maryland baseball history. Whether developing tomorrow’s Major League stars or competing for championships, the Keys remain an essential part of the state’s rich baseball tradition and one of the premier sports attractions in Western Maryland.
