Allegany College of Maryland

Founded in 1961 as Allegany Community College, Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) has served as the educational cornerstone of Western Maryland for more than six decades. Established by the Allegany County Board of Education and the Allegany County Commissioners, the college was created to provide affordable, high-quality higher education to the residents of Allegany County and the surrounding Appalachian region. In 1996, the institution adopted its current name, Allegany College of Maryland, to reflect its growing regional reach and expanding educational mission.

Located in Cumberland, Maryland, ACM has grown from an initial enrollment of just over 100 students into a comprehensive community college serving thousands of students each year. The college also operates locations in Pennsylvania, making it one of the few Maryland community colleges with a significant multi-state presence. Today, ACM offers dozens of associate degree, certificate, and workforce training programs designed to prepare students for successful careers or seamless transfer to four-year universities.

Throughout its history, Allegany College of Maryland has played a vital role in the economic development of Western Maryland. From its strong nursing, allied health, business, technology, and skilled trades programs to partnerships with local industries and employers, the college has consistently adapted to meet the changing workforce needs of the region. Recent investments, including renovations to its Technology Building and the acquisition of the Western Maryland Works Training Center, further demonstrate ACM’s commitment to workforce development and student success.

Athletics have long been a source of pride at Allegany College of Maryland. Competing as the Trojans in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), ACM fields teams in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, and volleyball. The Trojans have enjoyed national success, with multiple NJCAA World Series appearances in baseball and numerous national tournament appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, helping establish ACM as one of Maryland’s premier junior college athletic programs.

Today, Allegany College of Maryland continues its mission of transforming lives through accessible education, workforce training, and competitive athletics. As the leading community college in Western Maryland, ACM remains dedicated to strengthening its communities, preparing students for lifelong success, and proudly representing the region both inside and outside the classroom.
