Allegany College of Maryland Men’s Basketball remembered former Trojan standout Michael Horton, who played for the program during the 1996-97 season. Horton earned Region XX Tournament MVP honors after recording 15 points and 15 assists in a championship victory over Hagerstown Community College.
Horton Powered Allegany’s Record-Setting Offense
Allegany College of Maryland averaged a school-record 102.4 points per game during the 1996-97 season, with Horton serving as a point guard. He finished the season with 365 assists, 424 points and a 60.1% shooting rate from two-point range.
Horton also produced in key games. He scored 21 points in Allegany’s first NJCAA National Tournament game and recorded a season-high 20 assists against CCAC South Campus.
Horton’s Basketball Career
Before attending Allegany College of Maryland, Horton was a three-year starter at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,753 career points after averaging 32 points, nine assists and nine rebounds per game as a senior.
Horton’s high school honors included Street & Smith All-American, Virginia All-State First Team and Washington Post All-Metro Second Team recognition. He later played at the University of Cincinnati from 1997-99 under coach Bob Huggins.
Horton appeared in 57 games for Cincinnati, averaging 4.8 points and 4.1 assists per game. He also earned a spot on the 1998 Conference USA All-Tournament Team and was inducted into the Alexandria City Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

Former Allegany head coach Bob Kirk once said of Horton, “Michael Horton has the potential to be better than any point guard we’ve ever had.” Allegany College of Maryland said Horton’s contributions to its basketball program would not be forgotten.
The athletics department extended its thoughts to Horton’s family, friends, former teammates, coaches and others who knew him. The program also recognized his impact on Allegany College of Maryland basketball and the broader basketball community.
