Orioles Sign First-Round Pick Eric Booth Jr. to Near Slot Deal

The Baltimore Orioles have officially secured the signature of their top selection from the 2026 MLB Draft, agreeing to terms with first-round pick Eric Booth Jr., the No. 7 overall selection. The deal is reportedly worth $7,324,700, just $2,500 below the assigned slot value, allowing Baltimore to sign one of the nation’s premier high school prospects while maintaining maximum flexibility for the remainder of its draft class.
For Orioles fans, the signing is another important step in the organization’s effort to replenish a farm system that has graduated much of its elite talent to the major leagues over the past several seasons.
One of the Best Athletes in the 2026 Draft
Booth, a center fielder from Oak Grove High School in Mississippi, entered the draft as one of the most dynamic prep players available.
The switch-hitting outfielder brings an exciting combination of:
- Elite speed
- Premium defensive ability in center field
- Strong arm
- High baseball IQ
- Developing power from both sides of the plate
Scouts believe Booth has the athleticism to remain in center field throughout his professional career, giving the Orioles another potential impact defender up the middle. His speed also projects to make him a threat on the bases from the moment he enters professional baseball.
Many evaluators considered Booth one of the safest high school position players available because of his well-rounded skill set rather than relying on one standout tool alone.
Orioles Waste No Time
Getting first-round selections under contract quickly is often a priority for MLB clubs. It allows players to begin their professional development immediately and gives organizations more certainty as they negotiate with later-round selections before the signing deadline.
Baltimore’s agreement also leaves the Orioles with additional bonus pool flexibility for several high-upside players selected later in the draft.
A New Era of Orioles Drafting
General manager Mike Elias and his scouting department took a different approach in this year’s draft.
Instead of emphasizing college talent, Baltimore selected one of its youngest draft classes in recent memory, focusing heavily on athletic upside. Booth became the centerpiece of that strategy.
The Orioles believe his ceiling is that of an everyday Major League center fielder capable of impacting games in every phase.
What Comes Next?
Booth is expected to report to the Orioles’ player development complex in Sarasota before beginning his professional career in the minor leagues.
Like most high school prospects, there will be patience with his development, but his athletic gifts give him one of the highest ceilings in Baltimore’s farm system.
If everything progresses as planned, Orioles fans could be watching one of the organization’s next cornerstone players develop over the coming seasons.
MSB Take
Signing Eric Booth Jr. quickly is excellent news for the Orioles.
The organization drafted arguably the most athletic position player available at No. 7 and wasted little time getting him into the system. Booth fits the modern style of baseball: speed, defense, athleticism, and projectable offensive upside.
While Orioles fans naturally want immediate help at the Major League level, championships are sustained through player development. Booth now becomes one of the crown jewels of Baltimore’s next wave of prospects.
The Orioles have built playoff-caliber clubs by drafting and developing talent like Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, and Enrique Bradfield Jr. Eric Booth Jr. now has the opportunity to become the next name on that list.
The hard work starts now, but Baltimore has officially signed one of the most exciting young talents in the 2026 MLB Draft.
