Orioles Recall Christian Encarnacion-Strand After Blaze Alexander Injury Creates Infield Void

The Baltimore Orioles made a necessary roster move on Thursday, recalling infielder/first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand from Triple-A Norfolk after placing versatile infielder Blaze Alexander on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hand. The move is retroactive to July 13 and comes after Alexander suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch during Sunday’s victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Alexander’s injury is a difficult blow for an Orioles club that had finally begun building momentum before the All-Star break. Baltimore entered the break riding its first four-game winning streak of the 2026 season, but losing one of its most consistent hitters dampened the celebration.

Alexander Had Become One of Baltimore’s Most Valuable Players

Few players exceeded expectations more than Blaze Alexander during the first half of the season.

After arriving from the Arizona Diamondbacks in an offseason trade, Alexander became one of the Orioles’ most reliable offensive contributors while providing defensive flexibility across the infield and outfield. Before suffering the injury, Alexander was batting .312 with a .368 on-base percentage, .439 slugging percentage, four home runs, and 29 RBI in 82 games.

Alexander was also in the middle of another productive afternoon against Kansas City, collecting two hits, scoring twice, and drawing a walk before being struck in the left hand by a pitch from Royals reliever Lucas Erceg.

Medical imaging later revealed a non-displaced fracture, and Baltimore officially placed him on the injured list while he continues to be evaluated.

Opportunity Knocks for Christian Encarnacion-Strand

Baltimore will now turn to Christian Encarnacion-Strand, one of the organization’s more intriguing power bats.

The Orioles acquired Encarnacion-Strand from the Cincinnati Reds in April after he was designated for assignment, believing his offensive upside was worth taking a chance on.

The 26-year-old right-handed hitter already has Major League success on his résumé.

During his rookie campaign with Cincinnati in 2023, Encarnacion-Strand hit 13 home runs with 37 RBI in just 63 games, showcasing the power that once made him one of baseball’s better hitting prospects. Across parts of three Major League seasons entering 2026, he owns 21 career home runs and 72 RBI while appearing with the Reds before joining Baltimore.

Before reaching the Major Leagues, Encarnacion-Strand established himself as one of the best power hitters in the minor leagues.

Highlights include:

  • Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
  • Big 12 Newcomer of the Year at Oklahoma State.
  • Fourth-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2021.
  • 114 RBI across the minor leagues in 2022.
  • Hit .331 with 20 home runs in Triple-A Louisville before his Major League debut in 2023.

While consistency has been elusive at the Major League level, few question his raw offensive ability.

What the Orioles Need

Replacing Alexander completely is almost impossible because of everything he brought to the roster.

Alexander could play nearly every position on the diamond while consistently producing quality at-bats.

Encarnacion-Strand offers something different.

He brings legitimate right-handed power and could provide another run-producing threat if he finds his rhythm. Baltimore may use him primarily at first base while also giving him opportunities around the infield depending on matchups.

The Orioles have searched throughout the season for consistent power behind their young core, and Encarnacion-Strand has the ability to provide exactly that if he can capitalize on this opportunity.

A Critical Stretch Ahead

The Orioles return from the All-Star break still attempting to climb back into the American League playoff race.

Every roster decision becomes increasingly important over the final two months, making Encarnacion-Strand’s promotion more significant than a routine injury replacement.

If he performs well, Baltimore could discover another valuable bat for the stretch run.

If not, the front office may be forced to explore additional infield help before the trade deadline.

MSB Analysis

This is an unfortunate loss for Baltimore.

Blaze Alexander quietly became one of the Orioles’ most dependable players this season. His versatility, contact hitting, and ability to spark rallies made him invaluable, even if he was not receiving national attention.

The silver lining is that Christian Encarnacion-Strand possesses considerably more raw power than most internal options. Baltimore has very little to lose by giving him everyday at-bats while Alexander recovers.

If Encarnacion-Strand can rediscover the swing that made him one of the Reds’ top prospects, this could become one of the more important under-the-radar roster moves of the Orioles’ season.

For now, the Orioles hope Alexander’s absence is brief while Encarnacion-Strand gets another chance to prove he belongs as a Major League regular.
