Orioles Rally Past Astros 3-2 as Taylor Ward’s Late Home Run Extends Baltimore’s Winning Streak to Five

The Baltimore Orioles opened the second half of the season with another dramatic victory, defeating the Houston Astros 3-2 on Friday night at Daikin Park. Trailing entering the eighth inning, Baltimore rallied behind Taylor Ward’s go-ahead two-run home run to extend its winning streak to five games.
For much of the evening, the Orioles had difficulty generating offense against Houston starter Peter Lambert, who struck out 10 batters over six innings. Baltimore’s only run against Lambert came in the third inning when Pete Alonso drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1.
Houston answered to regain a 2-1 lead and appeared to have control of the game entering the late innings.
Everything changed in the eighth.
Adley Rutschman opened the inning with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. After a pair of outs, Taylor Ward delivered the biggest hit of the night, launching a two-run home run to give Baltimore its first lead of the game at 3-2. The blast capped another comeback victory for an Orioles team that has found ways to win close games during its recent hot streak.
Baltimore’s pitching staff also played a major role in the victory.
Starter Dean Kremer battled through four innings, allowing two runs while keeping the Orioles within striking distance. The bullpen took over from there and shut Houston down the rest of the way.
Making his Orioles debut, Cam Sanders escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to keep the deficit at one run and earn the victory. Andrew Kittredge followed with a scoreless eighth before Tyler Wells closed out the ninth inning for his third save of the season.
Although Baltimore managed only five hits and struck out 13 times, the Orioles once again proved that timely hitting can outweigh offensive volume. Ward’s eighth-inning home run was enough to overcome Houston’s early advantage and give Baltimore its fifth consecutive victory.
The Orioles have now won five straight games entering the second half of the season and continue to build momentum as they try to climb back into the American League playoff race.
MSB Take
The Orioles are finally beginning to resemble the team many expected to see entering the season.
Earlier this year, Baltimore repeatedly found ways to lose games exactly like this one. Friday night was different. The Orioles did not have many offensive opportunities, but they stayed within striking distance, trusted their bullpen and capitalized when the biggest moment arrived.
Taylor Ward’s home run will receive the headlines, and deservedly so. His two-run blast completely changed the game and demonstrated why Baltimore wanted his bat in the middle of its lineup. Ward gives the Orioles another hitter capable of changing a game with one swing, something this offense desperately needed.
Just as important was the performance of the bullpen. Cam Sanders’ escape from a bases-loaded jam during his Orioles debut may have saved the game before Ward ever stepped to the plate. Those are the types of moments that often define winning streaks.
Winning five consecutive games is not enough to erase the frustrations of the first half, but it is enough to build confidence. Baltimore is receiving stronger pitching, more consistent bullpen performances and timely offense. Those ingredients are exactly what winning baseball teams rely upon.
The Orioles still have plenty of work ahead of them, but this stretch feels different. Instead of waiting for someone else to make a play, Baltimore is creating its own opportunities and taking advantage of them.
If Friday night’s comeback is any indication, the Orioles are entering the second half believing they can beat anyone, even when the odds appear to be against them. That confidence could become one of their biggest strengths over the final months of the season.
