Orioles Open Second Half With Three-Game Road Series Against Astros

The Baltimore Orioles return from the All-Star break on Friday night as they begin the second half of the 2026 season with a three-game series against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park.

Baltimore enters the series at 46-51, while Houston sits at 47-51, putting two clubs with nearly identical records against each other in an important weekend series. For the Orioles, the trip to Houston represents an opportunity to build on the momentum they generated immediately before the break and begin making up ground in the American League playoff race.

The Orioles’ probable rotation for the weekend is set, with Dean Kremer, Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish scheduled to take the mound. Houston is expected to counter with Peter Lambert, Spencer Arrighetti and Hunter Brown. Probable pitchers remain subject to change.

Friday, July 17 — 8:10 p.m. ET

RHP Dean Kremer (1-2, 4.09 ERA) vs. RHP Peter Lambert (8-5, 3.14 ERA)

Kremer gets the first assignment out of the break for Baltimore. The right-hander enters Friday’s start with a 1-2 record and 4.09 ERA with 24 strikeouts.

Houston counters with Lambert, who has quietly put together a strong season. Lambert enters the matchup at 8-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 81 strikeouts, giving the Astros an advantage on paper in the opening pitching matchup.

The first game could be particularly important for Baltimore. Starting the second half with a victory would immediately continue the positive momentum the Orioles created before the break.

Saturday, July 18 — 4:10 p.m. ET

LHP Trevor Rogers (6-7, 4.48 ERA) vs. RHP Spencer Arrighetti

Rogers is scheduled to handle Saturday’s game for Baltimore, according to the Orioles rotation announced ahead of the series. The left-hander enters the weekend at 6-7 with a 4.48 ERA.

Houston is expected to send Arrighetti to the mound for the middle game of the series.

For Rogers, the second half provides an opportunity to establish more consistency in the Orioles rotation. Baltimore needs quality innings from its starters if the club hopes to climb back into serious contention, and Rogers will be an important part of that effort.

Sunday, July 19 — 2:10 p.m. ET

RHP Kyle Bradish (6-9, 3.61 ERA) vs. RHP Hunter Brown

The most intriguing pitching matchup of the weekend comes in Sunday’s series finale.

Bradish is scheduled to start for Baltimore after posting a 6-9 record and 3.61 ERA entering the series. Despite the losing record, his ERA suggests he has pitched considerably better than his win-loss total might indicate.

Houston will counter with Brown, setting up what could be the strongest starting pitching matchup of the three-game set. ESPN also lists Bradish and Brown as the probable starters for Sunday’s finale.

Orioles Need to Carry Momentum Into Second Half

Baltimore’s season has not gone according to plan, but the Orioles gave themselves something positive to build on before the All-Star break.

Now comes the difficult part.

The Orioles need to turn a good stretch into sustained winning baseball.

At 46-51, Baltimore does not have much room for an extended losing streak. The Orioles are approaching the portion of the calendar when every series becomes increasingly important, especially with the MLB Trade Deadline looming later this month. The next several games could have a significant impact on how the organization approaches the deadline.

Houston finds itself in a similar position at 47-51. That makes this series particularly interesting. Neither club enters the weekend where it expected to be, and both have an opportunity to begin the second half by beating another team fighting to stay relevant in the American League race.

Baltimore’s pitching will be under the microscope immediately. Kremer, Rogers and Bradish will be asked to set the tone for a second half in which the Orioles need their rotation to provide stability.

The matchup to watch may come Sunday. Bradish has the best ERA among Baltimore’s three scheduled starters for the series, and a strong performance against Brown could give the Orioles a chance to finish the weekend on a high note.

The Orioles do not necessarily need a sweep in Houston, but winning the series would be a strong way to open the second half.

Baltimore finished the first portion of its schedule showing signs of life. Now the Orioles need to prove that momentum can survive the All-Star break.

Series Schedule

  • Friday, July 17, 8:10 p.m. ET: Dean Kremer vs. Peter Lambert
  • Saturday, July 18, 4:10 p.m. ET: Trevor Rogers vs. Spencer Arrighetti
  • Sunday, July 19, 2:10 p.m. ET: Kyle Bradish vs. Hunter Brown

All three games will be played at Daikin Park in Houston, with Friday’s opener televised on MASN in the Orioles market.

This is a series Baltimore should view as an opportunity. The Astros are only a half-game ahead of the Orioles entering the weekend, and taking two of three would put Baltimore back on the right side of .500 baseball for the second half while providing some much-needed momentum for the stretch run.

The Orioles have spent much of 2026 trying to dig themselves out of an early-season hole. The second half offers them another chance to change the direction of their season.

That opportunity begins Friday night in Houston.
