Orioles Drop Heartbreaker to Red Sox, 6-5, After Costly Defensive Mistakes at Fenway

BOSTON — The Baltimore Orioles had multiple opportunities to steal the series opener at Fenway Park on Monday night, but four defensive errors and a late Boston home run proved too much to overcome in a 6-5 loss to the Red Sox.

Boston improved to 51-48 with the victory, while Baltimore slipped to 49-52, dropping another tightly contested American League East matchup.

Early Momentum Swings

Baltimore struck first in the opening inning when Tyler O’Neill ripped a ground-rule double to score Gunnar Henderson, giving the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead against his former club.

The Red Sox answered in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jarren Duran before taking control in the third inning. Wilyer Abreu delivered an RBI double that was aided by an Orioles defensive miscue, and Willy Contreras followed with an RBI infield single to give Boston a 3-1 advantage.

Orioles Rally Back

The Orioles refused to go quietly.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to one run, injecting life into Baltimore’s offense.

The visitors then pieced together an impressive rally in the sixth inning. RBI singles from Jackson Holliday and Encarnacion-Strand pushed Baltimore back in front, 4-3, rewarding an offense that consistently put pressure on Boston’s pitching staff.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, the lead was short-lived.

Boston Responds

The Red Sox answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth as Contreras delivered an RBI double to even the score once again.

Boston tied the game another time in the seventh after another Orioles defensive mistake allowed an additional run to cross the plate. Defensive lapses haunted Baltimore throughout the night, with four errors extending innings and creating extra scoring opportunities for the home team.

The decisive moment came in the eighth inning when C. Durbin launched a solo home run off reliever Tyler Wells, giving Boston a 6-5 advantage it would not relinquish.

Garrett Whitlock earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief before Aroldis Chapman shut the door for his 22nd save of the season.

Orioles Offensive Highlights

Despite the loss, Baltimore’s offense produced several encouraging performances.

• Gunnar Henderson collected three hits and scored a run.
• Tyler O’Neill drove in two runs against his former team.
• Christian Encarnacion-Strand finished with a home run and two RBIs while continuing to provide middle-of-the-order production.

Starter Shane Baz kept the Orioles within striking distance through six innings, but Baltimore’s bullpen could not hold the late tie.

The Orioles outhit Boston in key moments and battled back from multiple deficits, but the difference came in the field. Four errors gave the Red Sox extra outs and additional scoring chances, ultimately proving to be the deciding factor in a one-run game.

Against quality divisional opponents, clean defense is often the difference between winning and losing, and Monday night was a perfect example.

Baltimore showed resilience by erasing deficits twice and received productive nights from Henderson, O’Neill, and Encarnacion-Strand. The offense was good enough to win.

The defense was not.

Four errors simply are not going to beat a playoff-caliber club on the road, especially at Fenway Park. The Orioles continue to show flashes of the offensive potential that fueled their recent winning streak, but until the defensive mistakes are cleaned up, games like this will continue to slip away.

The good news is Baltimore remains very much in the fight with two games remaining in the series. Winning the next two would erase the disappointment of Monday night’s loss and keep momentum alive heading into another important stretch of the season.
