Navy Football Preview: Midshipmen Host High-Powered North Texas in Critical Homecoming Showdown

By Brian Hradsky

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy Midshipmen return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 24, looking to turn their season around against the North Texas Mean Green in an important American Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., with national television coverage on CBS Sports Network.

Navy enters the contest with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-3 conference mark, while North Texas arrives at 4-2 overall and 2-0 in American Conference play. The matchup features two contrasting offensive philosophies, with Navy relying on its powerful rushing attack and North Texas possessing one of the most explosive passing offenses in college football.

The Midshipmen have struggled to finish close games this season, but their performances have often been more competitive than their record suggests. Navy has lost four games by eight points or fewer and remains undefeated at home this season. Saturday’s Homecoming crowd could provide the extra energy necessary to produce an upset.

Navy Looks to Rebound From Heartbreaking UTSA Loss

Navy enters Saturday following a disappointing 38-34 loss to UTSA on October 17. The Midshipmen held a late fourth-quarter lead before the Roadrunners scored the winning touchdown with 2:45 remaining. The defeat was another frustrating result in a season defined by competitive games and missed opportunities.

Quarterback Jackson Gutierrez delivered an outstanding individual performance against UTSA, rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 120 yards and two additional scores. His versatility continues to make him the centerpiece of Navy’s offensive attack. The junior has accumulated 640 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns through six games.

Tight end Jordan Collins also produced a memorable performance against UTSA, catching two passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. His 92-yard touchdown reception from Gutierrez established a Navy school record for the longest completed pass. The explosive connection demonstrated that the Midshipmen can generate big plays through the air despite their run-heavy offensive philosophy.

North Texas Features One of the Nation’s Most Explosive Offenses

North Texas enters Annapolis averaging 42.2 points and 533.8 yards of total offense per game. The Mean Green rank among the nation’s leaders in scoring, passing and total offensive production. Their ability to stretch the field presents a particularly difficult challenge for Navy’s secondary.

Quarterback Tayven Jackson has thrown for 1,868 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions through six games. His accuracy and decision-making have helped North Texas average 347 passing yards per contest. Jackson completed 24 of 31 passes for 349 yards and five touchdowns during the Mean Green’s 50-10 victory over Charlotte on October 10.

Running back Jahiem White gives North Texas another dangerous offensive weapon, entering the matchup with 687 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Receiver Justin Stevenson has contributed 453 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Navy must account for both players while attempting to prevent Jackson from controlling the game through the air.

Statistical Comparison

North Texas holds a considerable advantage in overall offensive production, averaging 533.8 total yards compared with Navy’s 413.3 yards per game. The Mean Green also average 42.2 points, while the Midshipmen score 28.2 points per contest. However, Navy possesses a significant advantage in rushing offense.

The Midshipmen average 297.8 rushing yards per game, ranking fourth nationally, while North Texas averages 186.8 yards on the ground. Navy also allows just 98.8 rushing yards per game, demonstrating the strength of its defensive front against opposing ground attacks. The biggest concern remains pass defense, where Navy allows 247.7 yards per game.

North Texas has allowed 29.2 points per game, suggesting the Midshipmen should have opportunities to generate offense. Navy must take advantage of those opportunities by sustaining drives and converting possessions into touchdowns. Field goals alone may not be enough against a team capable of scoring more than 40 points.

Three Keys to a Navy Victory

Establish the Running Game

Navy must control possession by establishing its rushing attack early. Gutierrez and the Midshipmen have the ability to produce long, methodical drives that keep opposing offenses on the sidelines. Against North Texas, limiting possessions could be just as important as scoring points.

The Midshipmen should also benefit from their ability to create explosive rushing plays. Their option-based offensive system forces defenders to maintain discipline on every snap. If North Texas struggles with assignments or overcommits to Gutierrez, Navy could create opportunities for significant gains.

Pressure Tayven Jackson

North Texas has done an excellent job protecting Jackson, allowing fewer than one sack per game. Navy must find ways to disrupt his rhythm without leaving receivers uncovered downfield. Defensive pressure will be particularly important on third downs and in obvious passing situations.

The Midshipmen cannot afford to let Jackson operate comfortably throughout the afternoon. Navy has struggled at times against productive passing offenses, and North Texas has the weapons to exploit defensive mistakes. Creating negative plays and forcing hurried throws would help Navy’s chances considerably.

Win the Turnover Battle

Turnovers have been a significant problem for Navy this season, with the Midshipmen entering Saturday carrying a minus-six turnover margin. North Texas has a plus-two margin, giving the Mean Green another statistical advantage. Navy must protect the football and avoid providing its opponent with additional scoring opportunities.

The Midshipmen also need to improve their third-down defense after allowing opponents to convert 44.6% of their opportunities. Getting North Texas off the field would help Navy control the pace of the contest. A few critical defensive stops could determine whether the Midshipmen have an opportunity to win in the fourth quarter.

Homecoming Atmosphere Gives Navy an Advantage

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium has been a difficult place for visiting opponents under head coach Brian Newberry. The Midshipmen enter Saturday with an eight-game home winning streak, providing reason for optimism despite their disappointing overall record. The Homecoming atmosphere should make Annapolis particularly challenging for North Texas.

The Mean Green are aware of the challenge, with head coach Neal Brown emphasizing Navy’s competitiveness and unusual offensive system during preparations. Navy’s rushing attack requires opponents to maintain assignment discipline throughout the game. One defensive mistake can quickly turn into a long touchdown run.

Saturday also carries postseason implications for the Midshipmen, who need four additional victories to reach the traditional six-win threshold for bowl eligibility. A victory over North Texas would provide momentum heading into another difficult matchup against Notre Dame on October 31. The Midshipmen cannot afford to overlook the opportunity in front of them.

Maryland Sports Blog Prediction: North Texas 34, Navy 31

North Texas enters the contest with the stronger offensive statistics and a passing attack capable of exploiting Navy’s defensive weaknesses. However, the Midshipmen should be able to move the football against a North Texas defense allowing nearly 30 points per game. Navy’s rushing attack and home-field advantage should keep the contest competitive throughout the afternoon.

Expect Gutierrez to produce another strong performance while attempting to keep Jackson and the Mean Green offense off the field. Navy has the potential to win if it protects the football and creates timely defensive stops. North Texas receives a slight edge because of its explosive passing game, but an upset would not be surprising.

MSB Take

Navy has been better than its 2-4 record suggests, but the Midshipmen must begin turning competitive performances into victories. Gutierrez has provided exciting offensive production, and the team’s rushing attack remains one of the strongest in college football. Unfortunately, turnovers and defensive inconsistency have repeatedly prevented Navy from finishing games successfully.

North Texas represents another difficult challenge, particularly because of its outstanding passing offense. However, Navy’s home-field advantage and ability to control the clock give the Midshipmen a realistic opportunity to defeat the Mean Green. Saturday could become a turning point for Navy’s season if the team plays disciplined football and avoids the costly mistakes that have defined several recent losses.

Prediction: North Texas 34, Navy 31
