Maryland Women’s Basketball is in the Big Dance, first round against Iowa State

“Let me hear you say Fear the Turtle” Bri McDaniel, who has been the team’s energy plug, let everyone know she was ready.

It was an exciting but anxious moment for many Sunday evening at the Xfinity Center. The Terrapins were the last team to hear their name as they watched and waited to hear their name called.

Maryland will take on Iowa State as the tenth seed. Many, people will say this was a down year for Brenda Frese as a head coach. This team went (19-13, 9-9), I will disagree.

I will say this team is an example of the Cardiac Kids. Coming into the season the team lost two seniors that went into the WNBA (Diamond Miller & Abby Meyers) however, it felt like this team was written off from the jump.

This team has shown a true testament of trust, and more importantly, buying into one another. Yes, we have seen some tough losses but as the piece’s writer, I feel some of the criticism is unwarranted.

Maryland is heading to the West Coast to face Iowa State on neutral territory. Iowa State coached by Bill Fennelly an underrated coach in the women’s basketball atmosphere. Brenda Frese spent four years under Fennelly and considers him a mentor. “What propelled me in my coaching career,” Frese said.

Iowa State in the Portland 4 region was given the 7th seed, as Maryland is the 10th seed. The first-round game will take place in Palo Alto, California this Friday. Iowa State is similar to Illinois, and Maryland is the sleeper in this region. But they do have an uphill battle if they advance.
