Archbishop Spalding Blanks Gilman 32-0 in Home Opener

Archbishop Spalding made an emphatic statement in its home opener, shutting out the Gilman Greyhounds 32-0 in another dominant performance from one of Maryland’s premier high school football programs. The Cavaliers controlled the matchup on both sides of the football and never allowed Gilman to establish enough momentum to threaten the lead. Spalding’s combination of defense, physicality and disciplined football turned the game into a one-sided victory.
The Cavaliers’ defense established control early and never gave it back. Spalding consistently put Gilman in difficult situations, preventing the Greyhounds from sustaining drives and keeping them from producing the explosive plays needed to change the game. Every time Gilman attempted to generate momentum, the Cavaliers responded and kept the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.
Holding an MIAA A Conference opponent scoreless is an impressive accomplishment regardless of the point in the season. Spalding’s defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage, while the rest of the defense prevented Gilman from finding consistent openings. The Cavaliers remained disciplined for four quarters and finished the job rather than allowing a late score after the outcome had essentially been decided.
Spalding’s offense complemented the defensive performance by steadily building a comfortable advantage. The Cavaliers did not need to force the issue offensively because their defense continually put them in control of the game. Spalding protected its advantage, avoided allowing Gilman back into the contest and eventually stretched the margin to 32 points.
The victory continues an impressive period for the Cavaliers, who have developed into the standard of the MIAA A Conference. Spalding entered the season coming off its fourth consecutive conference championship, an accomplishment that established the Cavaliers as the first program to win four straight MIAA A titles. Their sustained success has turned Spalding into one of the programs every conference opponent measures itself against.
That recent championship history makes performances such as Saturday’s shutout even more significant. Spalding has changed from a team trying to reach the top of the conference into one expected to contend for a championship every season. Maintaining that standard requires replacing graduating talent, developing younger players and continuing to perform against some of the best private-school football programs in Maryland.
Gilman has plenty of tradition of its own and remains one of the most recognizable high school athletic programs in the Baltimore area. However, the Greyhounds were unable to match Spalding’s consistency over four quarters in this matchup. Falling behind a team with the Cavaliers’ defense made the challenge even greater because Gilman could not produce the quick scoring response necessary to change the direction of the game.
For Spalding, the 32-0 final score provided an early indication that the program’s identity remains intact. The Cavaliers can control the line of scrimmage, play disciplined defense and steadily put points on the board without needing to turn every possession into a shootout. Those traits have played a major role in Spalding’s championship run and were on display again in the home opener.
The schedule will become increasingly important as Spalding works toward another MIAA A Conference championship run. Every opponent will have an opportunity to measure itself against the Cavaliers, while Spalding will receive each team’s best effort because of what the program has accomplished in recent seasons. If the Cavaliers continue producing complete performances like the one against Gilman, they will remain firmly in the championship conversation.

Archbishop Spalding did exactly what a championship-caliber program should do in its home opener. The Cavaliers controlled the game, dominated defensively and never gave Gilman an opportunity to turn the matchup into a competitive fourth-quarter battle. A 32-0 shutout against a program with Gilman’s tradition is an impressive result and another reminder of how high Spalding has raised the standard in the MIAA A Conference.
Spalding has reached the point where winning games is no longer the only expectation. The Cavaliers are expected to compete for championships, and maintaining that level year after year is often more difficult than reaching it in the first place. Based on this performance, the defending conference champions appear ready to continue making every MIAA A contender go through Spalding.
