Washington College Shoremen men’s soccer lost 3-1 to the University of Mary Washington Eagles on Sept. 12 at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The nonconference defeat dropped Washington College to 1-1-3, while the University of Mary Washington improved to 4-0-0.
Jordan Waiganjo scored Washington College’s goal at 52:36, his first of the season, after stealing the ball from a Mary Washington defender. The goal tied the match at 1-1, but the Eagles answered with two goals in the 58th minute to take the lead for good.
Mary Washington Strikes Back After Waiganjo’s Equalizer
The University of Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead at 22:22 on a finish from about six yards out. Hannes Budde made multiple saves during the opening half, and Kaua de Oliveira also had a shot saved with 6:28 remaining before halftime.
Mary Washington scored twice shortly after Waiganjo’s equalizer. The first goal came 36 seconds after Washington College tied the match, while the second arrived at 57:17 on a header from 10 yards away.
Andrew Brittain scored all three goals for the Eagles. Micah Davis assisted the first goal, Jack Sturman assisted the second, and Elliot Berg and Michael Lenhard assisted the third.
Washington College Finishes With 10 Shots
Washington College totaled 10 shots and five corner kicks, including three corner kicks during the opening 20:21. Tshazi Kamau and Tucker Sprano helped create that early pressure.
The Shoremen recorded four shots on goal, compared with eight for the Eagles. Washington College’s final two shots on target came from Kaua de Oliveira and Misha Paul, but both attempts were saved.
Hannes Budde Makes Four Saves
Budde played all 90 minutes in goal for Washington College and made four saves while allowing three goals. The Shoremen were scheduled to return to action at Penn State Abington University on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
