The Chesapeake Baysox fell 9-7 to the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday, Sept. 6, in their regular-season home finale in Bowie, Maryland. Vance Honeycutt went 3-for-5 with two extra-base hits and a solo home run, while Tavian Josenberger also recorded three hits.
Chesapeake carried a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning before Portland scored seven combined runs across the fourth and fifth. The Baysox cut the deficit to one run in the eighth but could not complete the comeback.
Vance Honeycutt Delivers Three-Hit Performance
Honeycutt extended Chesapeake’s lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the third inning. It was his third home run in 16 Double-A games.
Honeycutt also reached on a bunt single in the sixth inning, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Ethan Anderson. In the six-game series against Portland, Honeycutt hit .409 with nine hits in 22 at-bats, three doubles, five RBIs and three stolen bases while playing in all six games.
Josenberger went 3-for-5. Anderson De Los Santos added a two-run single in the second inning and later reached on a Portland error in the eighth, allowing Josenberger to score.
Portland Overcomes Early Deficit
The Sea Dogs opened the scoring in the second inning before Chesapeake answered with two runs. Victor Figueroa and Josenberger reached base, and De Los Santos brought both home with a two-out single.
Portland moved in front in the fourth inning when Tyler McDonough hit a three-run home run. The Sea Dogs then extended their advantage to 8-3 with four runs in the fifth, including home runs by Will Turner and Max Ferguson.
Chesapeake scored three runs in the sixth inning. Anderson drove in Honeycutt, and Figueroa followed with a two-run home run that cut Portland’s lead to 8-6.
Figueroa’s home run was his fifth at the Double-A level and his 27th of the season across High-A Frederick and Double-A Chesapeake. The total led Baltimore Orioles minor-league players.
Pitching Decisions and Regular-Season Finale
Sebastian Gongora started for Chesapeake and pitched three innings, allowing one hit and three runs while striking out five. Gongora received a no-decision, while Alex Pham took the loss and fell to 0-3.
Portland’s Max Carlson earned the win and improved to 6-2 after pitching three one-run innings from the third through fifth innings. Tyler Davis pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his first save of the season.
The Chesapeake Baysox will conclude the regular season with a six-game series at the Richmond Flying Squirrels beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:05 p.m. Richmond is the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
