The Frederick Keys lost 4-3 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) in 11 innings Saturday night, Aug. 1, at Frederick’s Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. The defeat was Frederick’s fifth loss in six games against Wilmington.
Luis Vazquez Drives in Two Frederick Runs
JT Quinn opened the game on the mound for the Frederick Keys and threw a seven-pitch, 1-2-3 first inning. After a scoreless second, Luis Vazquez gave Frederick a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center field in the third inning.
Wilmington tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Edwin Amparo put the Keys back in front with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but Eli Willits hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams remained scoreless in the seventh and ninth innings, while Todd Kniebbe recorded a 1-2-3 top of the eighth for Frederick. The score remained tied after nine innings, sending the game to extra innings for the second time in the series.
Wilmington Scores Twice in the 11th
Braylin Tavera threw out the inherited runner at third in the 10th inning to keep Wilmington off the board. The Keys also remained scoreless in the bottom of the inning, leaving the game tied at 2-2.
Wilmington took a 4-2 lead on a two-RBI single that gave Wilmington the lead in the top of the 11th inning. Vazquez responded with an RBI single to left in the bottom half, but the Blue Rocks recorded the final out to secure the 4-3 victory.
Frederick Keys Scheduled for Sunday Finale
The Frederick Keys and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) are scheduled to meet in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Frederick’s Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The game is presented as Candy Chaos by Goldfish Swim School and Sunday Funday, courtesy of Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley. Promotions include pregame catch in the outfield, Meet the Team during the first 30 minutes after gates open, and a reusable bag giveaway courtesy of Saputo for the first 1,000 fans ages 13 and over.
