Delmarva Shorebirds Lose 5-4 to Fredericksburg Nationals on 10th-Inning Balk

Delmarva Shorebirds lost to the Fredericksburg Nationals, 5-4, in 10 innings Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Zac Lampton committed a balk with runners on the corners in the bottom of the 10th inning, allowing Fredericksburg’s winning run to score. Lampton took the loss and moved to 1-3.

Shorebirds Take Early Lead and Nationals Respond

Jordan Sanchez gave Delmarva an early lead with a 437-foot home run in the third inning. The homer marked Sanchez’s second consecutive game with a home run and put the Shorebirds ahead 1-0.

The Fredericksburg Nationals (often called the Fred Nats) answered in the bottom of the third inning. Luke Dickerson tied the game with a solo home run, and Hunter Hines followed with a two-run double that gave Fredericksburg a 3-1 lead.

Shorebirds Rally in Seventh Inning

Delmarva began its rally in the seventh inning when Jaiden Lo Re hit a two-out RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-2. DJ Layton tied the game with a single, and Jhomnardo Reyes followed with a single that scored Layton and gave the Shorebirds a 4-3 advantage. The hit marked Reyes’ first hit and RBI in the Orioles’ organization.

Fredericksburg tied the game on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning when Sir Jamison Jones hit a home run to make the score 4-4. Neither team scored again during regulation.

Strong Relief Effort from Adrian Heredia

Adrian Heredia helped keep Delmarva within reach with a season-high four innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one run on three hits during his relief appearance.

Walk-Off Balk Ends Game in Extra Innings

The Shorebirds stranded two runners and did not score in the top of the 10th inning. Fredericksburg then put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom half of the inning, setting up the deciding play with Coy James batting.

Lampton committed the balk, allowing the winning run to score and giving the Fredericksburg Nationals a 5-4 walk-off victory. Gus Hughes earned the win for Fredericksburg, moving to 1-0.

Records and Upcoming Game

Delmarva entered the game with a 36-68 overall record and a 13-25 record in their league. Fredericksburg entered Wednesday with a 64-39 overall record and an 18-19 record in the same league.

The Delmarva Shorebirds are scheduled to play Game 3 against the Fredericksburg Nationals on Thursday, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. The Shorebirds are attempting to end their losing streak.
