Adley Rutschman Is More Than a Catcher — Trading Him Could Damage the Orioles and Their Fan Base
When the Baltimore Orioles selected Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the organization was searching for more than a franchise catcher. It needed a leader capable of changing the culture of a rebuilding club.
That is exactly what Rutschman became.
Since making his Major League debut in 2022, the Orioles have transformed from one of baseball’s worst teams into a playoff contender. While stars such as Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg and others have been critical pieces of that rise, Rutschman has remained the face of the rebuild. His leadership behind the plate, game-calling, defensive ability and clubhouse presence have made him one of the most respected players in the organization.
Now, with reports indicating Baltimore is at least listening to trade inquiries ahead of the deadline, fans are understandably uneasy. Multiple reports emphasize the Orioles are not actively shopping Rutschman, but are willing to hear offers if another club presents an overwhelming package.
Rutschman Means More Than His Statistics
Baseball often measures players by batting average, home runs and WAR.
Rutschman’s value extends well beyond those numbers.
He handles one of the youngest pitching staffs in baseball. He prepares extensively before every series. His framing, game management and ability to build relationships with pitchers have consistently drawn praise from coaches and teammates throughout his career. Even during seasons when his offensive production has fluctuated, he has remained one of the game’s better all-around catchers.
Those qualities are difficult to replace.
The Catching Situation Is Already Fragile
Another reason a trade would be risky is Baltimore’s current health situation.
Samuel Basallo has looked like a future star, but he has also battled injuries during his rookie campaign. Most recently, the Orioles placed him on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. At the same time, Rutschman has also dealt with injuries, leaving Baltimore scrambling for catching depth.
When both players have been unavailable, the Orioles have been forced to rely on emergency options.
That exposes another organizational concern.
The depth behind Rutschman and Basallo has not inspired much confidence. Veteran replacements such as Sam Huff have provided temporary coverage, but none project as long-term answers on a contending team. Baltimore’s drop-off from its top two catchers to the next tier is significant.
Trading Rutschman while Basallo continues working through injuries would leave the Orioles dangerously thin at one of baseball’s most demanding positions.
Fans Have Invested in Adley
There is also the emotional side.
Baltimore fans endured years of losing while believing the rebuild would eventually pay off.
Rutschman became the symbol of that hope.
His debut represented the beginning of a new era. His jersey is among the most popular at Camden Yards. Children wear No. 35. He has become one of the franchise’s most recognizable faces since Cal Ripken Jr., Adam Jones and Manny Machado.
Trading a player who helped restore excitement to Orioles baseball would send a difficult message to a fan base that has remained remarkably patient.
Even if the baseball return made sense on paper, many fans would view the move as another example of failing to keep homegrown stars.
Could a Trade Make Baseball Sense?
There is a legitimate baseball argument.
Rutschman is under club control only through the 2027 season, and if the Orioles believe they cannot sign him to a long-term extension, his value may never be higher. Basallo also appears capable of becoming an impact Major League catcher, giving Baltimore unusual depth at the position.
That does not automatically mean a trade is the correct decision.
Championship organizations are built around elite players. Unless another team is willing to surrender an extraordinary package featuring multiple controllable impact players, the Orioles could be creating another hole while attempting to solve a future payroll question.

Adley Rutschman is not untouchable simply because of emotion. Every player has a price.
But Baltimore should set that price incredibly high.
The Orioles already know injuries can wipe out catching depth in a matter of days. They have experienced that reality this season with both Rutschman and Basallo missing time simultaneously. The alternatives simply have not shown they can provide everyday production at the Major League level.
More importantly, Rutschman represents something every successful franchise needs: stability, leadership and identity.
Those qualities rarely appear in a trade package.
If the Orioles truly intend to compete for championships over the next several seasons, keeping Adley Rutschman behind the plate may ultimately prove more valuable than whatever prospects or young talent another club is willing to offer.
