Commanders’ Northwest Stadium Earns Prestigious DHS SAFETY Act Designation
The Washington Commanders announced Thursday that Northwest Stadium has received a SAFETY Act Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), recognizing the organization’s comprehensive security program and its commitment to creating a safe environment for fans, players, employees and visitors.
The designation is awarded through the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act, a federal program established to encourage organizations to implement advanced anti-terrorism technologies and security practices. Northwest Stadium’s designation recognizes its extensive security measures, including physical and electronic security systems, emergency planning, operational procedures and trained personnel who oversee game-day and event operations.
According to the Commanders, the stadium’s security program follows the NFL’s Best Practices for Stadium Security during major events while also protecting guests during everyday operations. The DHS approved the designation on July 1, 2026, and it will remain in effect through June 30, 2031.
Receiving the designation demonstrates that the Commanders have invested heavily in fan safety at one of the region’s busiest entertainment venues. Northwest Stadium regularly hosts NFL games, concerts and other large-scale events that attract tens of thousands of people.
The SAFETY Act program provides legal liability protections to organizations that deploy DHS-approved anti-terrorism technologies and programs while encouraging continued investment in public safety.
