Washington Commanders Shake Up Roster as Training Camp Competition Intensifies

The Washington Commanders continued reshaping their training camp roster this week, announcing five moves that reflect both injury management and the fierce competition taking place in Ashburn as the 2026 NFL season approaches. The club signed veteran wide receiver River Cracraft and experienced punter Matt Haack, released outside linebacker Andre Carter II and tight end Anthony Firkser, and activated rookie cornerback Fred Davis II from the Active/Non-Football Illness list.

Veteran Help Arrives

The most significant addition is Matt Haack, who joins the Commanders after veteran punter Tress Way suffered a pectoral injury early in camp. General manager Adam Peters indicated the injury is not expected to keep Way out long, but Washington wanted an experienced punter capable of handling both punting duties and holding for the team’s kickers while Way recovers. Haack has spent time with several NFL teams and brings nearly a decade of professional experience.

Washington also reunited with wide receiver River Cracraft, a dependable veteran who spent time with the organization during the 2025 season. Carter, Firkser Released

Former Army standout Andre Carter II was among the roster casualties. Carter entered the NFL with significant potential after posting one of the most productive pass-rushing seasons in Army history, but he has struggled to secure a permanent role while bouncing between multiple organizations. With Washington adding depth at edge rusher this offseason, opportunities became increasingly limited.

Veteran tight end Anthony Firkser was also released. Firkser has enjoyed a lengthy NFL career as a dependable depth option and receiving tight end, but Washington’s young talent and competition at the position ultimately squeezed him off the roster.

Young Cornerback Returns

The Commanders also activated undrafted rookie cornerback Fred Davis II from the Active/Non-Football Illness list. Davis impressed coaches during the spring after a unique college journey that included stops at Clemson, UCF, Jacksonville State and Northwestern. His return gives Washington another developmental defensive back as training camp practices increase in intensity.
