Washington Commanders 2026 Offseason Recap: Reloading for Another NFC East Run

Washington Commanders 2026 Offseason Recap: Reloading for Another NFC East Run

After an aggressive rebuild under general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, the Washington Commanders entered the 2026 offseason focused on refining a roster they believe can return to playoff contention. The organization made significant coaching changes, added impact defenders, invested in another young draft class, and continued building around quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Coaching Staff Changes

The Commanders underwent major changes on both sides of the ball.

Head Coach

  • Dan Quinn

Offensive Coordinator

  • David Blough (promoted from quarterbacks coach)

Defensive Coordinator

  • Daronte Jones (hired from the Minnesota Vikings)

The promotions and hires signaled a commitment to continuity on offense while bringing a more aggressive defensive philosophy to Washington. Blough has worked closely with Jayden Daniels, while Jones inherits a defense expected to be one of the fastest and most physical units in the NFC.

Key Offseason Transactions

Washington concentrated on strengthening the roster rather than making splash headlines.

Re-Signings

  • QB Marcus Mariota
  • OL Nick Allegretti (contract extension)
  • DE Drake Jackson
  • K Jake Moody

Keeping Mariota provides an experienced backup behind Daniels, while Allegretti remains an important veteran presence along the offensive line.

Defensive Additions

One of Washington’s biggest additions was linebacker Leo Chenal, a former Kansas City Chief known for his physical run defense and championship experience. He joins a linebacking corps that already features Frankie Luvu and first-round rookie Sonny Styles, giving Washington tremendous athleticism in the middle of the defense.

2026 NFL Draft

Adam Peters continued building through the draft.

Round 1

  • LB Sonny Styles (Ohio State)

Round 3

  • WR Antonio Williams (Clemson)

Round 5

  • DE Joshua Josephs (Tennessee)

Round 6

  • RB Kaytron Allen (Penn State)
  • C Matt Gulbin (Michigan State)

Round 7

  • QB Athan Kaliakmanis (Rutgers)

Washington emphasized speed, toughness, and versatility throughout the draft. Styles immediately projects as a defensive cornerstone, Williams adds another young weapon at wide receiver, Josephs strengthens the pass rush, Allen provides depth in the running game, and Gulbin could develop into the team’s long-term answer at center.

Projected Offensive Core

Quarterback

  • Jayden Daniels
  • Marcus Mariota

Running Backs

  • Brian Robinson Jr.
  • Kaytron Allen
  • Austin Ekeler

Wide Receivers

  • Terry McLaurin
  • Antonio Williams
  • Noah Brown and a group competing for additional roles

Tight Ends

  • Zach Ertz
  • Ben Sinnott

Offensive Line

  • Laremy Tunsil anchors the left side
  • Nick Allegretti returns after his extension
  • Matt Gulbin enters camp as a developmental center prospect.

Projected Defensive Core

Washington’s defense could become the strength of the football team.

Key players include:

  • Frankie Luvu
  • Sonny Styles
  • Leo Chenal
  • Daron Payne
  • Jonathan Allen
  • Mike Sainristil

The linebacker room has been dramatically upgraded with Styles and Chenal joining Luvu, giving defensive coordinator Daronte Jones multiple versatile chess pieces.

Training Camp Storylines

Several position battles will be worth watching:

  • Jake Moody vs. Drew Stevens at kicker.
  • Nick Allegretti vs. rookie Matt Gulbin at center.
  • Development of Antonio Williams as Washington searches for a reliable No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin.
  • Jayden Daniels’ health after an injury-plagued 2025 season.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Washington did not chase headlines this offseason. Instead, Adam Peters continued building a sustainable contender through smart roster management, player development, and another strong draft.

The Commanders added toughness on defense with Sonny Styles and Leo Chenal, maintained continuity around Jayden Daniels by promoting David Blough, and continued investing in the offensive line and skill positions. If Daniels stays healthy, Washington has enough talent to compete for a playoff spot and challenge the Eagles and Cowboys in the NFC East.

The biggest question entering training camp remains the offense beyond Terry McLaurin. Finding consistent production from another receiver and keeping Daniels upright will determine whether Washington becomes merely competitive or develops into a legitimate postseason threat.

Overall, the Commanders appear deeper, younger, and more physical than they were a year ago. With Dan Quinn entering another season and Adam Peters continuing to reshape the roster, the franchise is positioned to take another significant step forward in 2026.
