Washington Capitals Recall Mitch Gibson From Hershey Bears, Place Vincent Desharnais on Injured Reserve

The Washington Capitals announced Friday that they have recalled goaltender Mitch Gibson from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League while placing defenseman Vincent Desharnais on injured reserve. The roster moves come as Washington deals with multiple injuries early in the 2026-27 NHL season. Gibson provides additional goaltending depth, while Desharnais is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix Thursday.

The decision to recall Gibson comes amid uncertainty surrounding starting goaltender Logan Thompson, who is dealing with a lower-body injury. Thompson missed practice Wednesday and Friday, and Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery described his status as day-to-day. Washington is preparing to host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, making the additional goaltending depth particularly important.

Gibson Gets Another NHL Opportunity

Gibson, 27, has appeared in two games with Hershey this season, posting a 1-1-0 record, a 3.50 goals-against average and an .881 save percentage. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound goaltender spent much of last season with the Bears, recording a 9-9-3 record with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in 23 appearances. He also recorded one shutout and made at least 30 saves in nine games.

The Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, native has also enjoyed considerable success with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL. During the 2025-26 season, Gibson appeared in 13 games for South Carolina, finishing 8-5-0 with a 2.32 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage and one shutout. His strongest professional stretch came during the 2024-25 season, when he went 12-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage in 14 games with the Stingrays.

Gibson has accumulated a 13-10-3 record, a 2.87 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in 28 career AHL appearances with Hershey. Before turning professional, he played at Harvard University, where he recorded 47 victories and six shutouts in 80 games. His experience throughout Washington’s minor league system gives the Capitals a familiar option if Thompson is unable to dress against Buffalo.

Desharnais Injury Creates Major Defensive Challenge

Desharnais, 30, underwent a successful appendectomy Thursday after developing appendicitis. The veteran defenseman is expected to miss four to six weeks, potentially keeping him out until late November or early December. His absence represents another significant setback for a Washington defensive unit that has already dealt with injuries during the opening weeks of the season.

The 6-foot-7 defenseman had been establishing himself as an important contributor following his arrival in Washington during the offseason. Desharnais signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract and recorded three assists, 22 hits and 18 blocked shots through his first nine games. He also led the Capitals with a plus-9 rating while averaging 19:24 of ice time per game, including significant responsibility on the penalty kill.

Desharnais brought valuable postseason experience to Washington after previously helping the Edmonton Oilers reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. His physical presence, defensive positioning and willingness to block shots had made him an important addition to the Capitals’ blue line. With Desharnais unavailable, Washington will need other defensemen to assume additional minutes and penalty-killing responsibilities.

Capitals Face Additional Roster Questions

Washington could turn to Dylan McIlrath or another defenseman from Hershey to help replace Desharnais. McIlrath filled the vacant defensive position during Friday’s practice, while Justin Holl remains another potential option after previously receiving an NHL recall earlier this season. The Capitals will need to manage their defensive depth carefully as they attempt to remain competitive in the Metropolitan Division.

There is some encouraging news on the injury front, with forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois and Justin Sourdif participating fully in Friday’s practice after dealing with illnesses. Dubois has missed five games, while Sourdif has missed two. Their potential returns could provide Washington with additional offensive depth as the team looks to rebound from Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

The Capitals enter Saturday’s matchup against Buffalo with a 5-4-0 record through nine games. Washington has shown flashes of strong play, but injuries and inconsistent performances have complicated the opening weeks of the season. With Thompson’s availability uncertain and Desharnais sidelined for an extended period, the Capitals must rely on their organizational depth to navigate another difficult stretch.

MSB Take

The Capitals are fortunate to have an established minor league system capable of supplying replacements when injuries occur. Gibson has demonstrated that he can perform at the AHL and ECHL levels, and his recall is a deserved opportunity to show what he can contribute at the NHL level. Although his early numbers with Hershey this season have been inconsistent, his previous success suggests he can provide Washington with valuable depth if needed.

Losing Desharnais for four to six weeks is arguably the more significant concern because of the defensive responsibilities he has assumed. Washington signed him to provide size, physicality and stability, and he was delivering those qualities during the opening nine games. The Capitals will need their remaining defensemen to elevate their performances, particularly on the penalty kill, while the organization evaluates whether additional reinforcements are necessary.

For Gibson, this recall represents another opportunity to establish himself within the Capitals organization. For Washington, the immediate priority is getting healthy and maintaining momentum in a competitive Eastern Conference. Saturday’s game against Buffalo will provide an early indication of how effectively the Capitals can adjust to their latest roster challenges.
