UFC Fight Night Preview: Gamrot Faces Surging Salkilld in Lightweight Main Event at UFC Vegas 120

UFC Fight Night Preview: Gamrot Faces Surging Salkilld in Lightweight Main Event at UFC Vegas 120

By Brian Hradsky | Maryland Sports Blog — MSB Fight Club

The UFC returns to Las Vegas on Saturday night with an intriguing clash between an established lightweight contender and one of the fastest-rising fighters in the division.

Mateusz Gamrot will meet Quillan Salkilld in the five-round main event of UFC Fight Night: Gamrot vs. Salkilld at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The preliminary card begins at 5 p.m. Eastern, followed by the five-fight main card at 8 p.m. on Paramount+. All 24 fighters scheduled to compete successfully made weight Friday.

The 12-fight lineup features several compelling storylines beyond the main event. Darren Elkins will make the final walk of his lengthy UFC career, former strawweight title challenger Amanda Lemos faces another dangerous contender, undefeated welterweight Ty Miller tries to continue his ascent and multiple prospects will attempt to establish themselves on the preliminary card.

Here is the complete MSB Fight Club breakdown and predictions.

Main Event: Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld — Lightweight

The main event is a legitimate test of whether Salkilld is ready to become part of the lightweight title picture.

Gamrot enters with a 26-4 record with one no contest, while Salkilld is 12-1 and has quickly become one of the division’s most dangerous emerging fighters. Gamrot brings substantially more experience against elite opposition, but Salkilld has youth, size and offensive momentum on his side.

Gamrot remains one of the UFC’s premier wrestlers. He averages 5.22 takedowns per 15 minutes while defending 83 percent of opponents’ takedown attempts. He has never been stopped by strikes as a professional, and his ability to continuously chain takedowns together can make him extremely difficult to beat over a long fight.

Salkilld presents a very different challenge.

The 26-year-old Australian stands 6 feet tall with a 75-inch reach compared with Gamrot’s 5-foot-10 frame and 70-inch reach. Salkilld lands 5.01 significant strikes per minute and has also produced impressive wrestling numbers, averaging 7.25 takedowns per 15 minutes. He has accumulated five UFC victories and four first-round finishes following his appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series. His most recent victory came by TKO against Beneil Dariush.

The biggest question is what happens when Salkilld encounters an opponent he cannot simply overpower on the ground.

Gamrot’s scrambling ability is outstanding, and Salkilld went 0-for-6 on takedown attempts across his fights with Dariush and Nasrat Haqparast. Gamrot should be considerably more difficult to control than either man.

That could turn the fight into a prolonged striking battle, where Salkilld’s reach, kicking attack and activity become significant advantages.

The betting market reflects how competitive the matchup is. Recent lines had Salkilld around -135 with Gamrot around +115.

Gamrot has the experience to derail the hype train, especially if he can force Salkilld into extended grappling exchanges. However, five rounds favor the younger and longer fighter if Gamrot cannot consistently dictate where the fight takes place.

MSB Fight Club Prediction: Quillan Salkilld by TKO, Round 4

Co-Main Event: Diego Ferreira vs. Billy Quarantillo — Lightweight

Diego Ferreira and Billy Quarantillo should provide exactly the type of violent fight fans expect from the co-main event.

Ferreira enters at 19-7, while Quarantillo is 18-7. Ferreira is 41 years old and has lost two consecutive fights and five of his past seven. Quarantillo, 37, has also struggled recently and has not competed since his knockout loss to Cub Swanson in December 2024.

Quarantillo is moving from featherweight to lightweight after dealing with difficult weight cuts. That could improve his endurance and durability, although he will no longer possess the same physical size advantage he often enjoyed at 145 pounds.

Ferreira remains an extremely dangerous grappler with seven submission victories and also owns five wins by knockout or TKO. Quarantillo’s greatest weapon is pressure. He averages an enormous 7.44 significant strikes landed per minute, but he also absorbs 5.83.

That style can produce spectacular fights, but it also leaves openings.

Ferreira may struggle during Quarantillo’s initial pressure, but his jiu-jitsu becomes increasingly dangerous if Quarantillo slows.

MSB Fight Club Prediction: Diego Ferreira by submission, Round 2

Darren Elkins vs. Yadier del Valle — Featherweight

This fight has considerably more emotional significance than a typical UFC Fight Night matchup.

Darren “The Damage” Elkins will retire following Saturday’s fight, closing a UFC career that began in 2010. Elkins has fought 30 times in the promotion and compiled a 19-11 UFC record. His overall professional record stands at 29-12.

Standing across the Octagon will be 10-1 prospect Yadier del Valle.

The betting market sees a changing of the guard. Del Valle has been priced as an enormous favorite, with some fight-week markets moving to roughly -750 or shorter, while Elkins has reached massive underdog territory.

Elkins’ wrestling, cardio and toughness have defined his career. Even at 42 years old, dismissing him completely would be a mistake.

However, del Valle is younger, faster and entering his prime while Elkins has openly acknowledged that the physical demands of training contributed to his decision to retire.

There may be one more trademark Elkins war left, but eventually the younger fighter’s speed should take over.

MSB Fight Club Prediction: Yadier del Valle by unanimous decision

Amanda Lemos vs. Alexia Thainara — Women’s Strawweight

This could become one of the night’s most important fights for the strawweight rankings.

Former title challenger Amanda Lemos enters at 15-6-1, while Alexia Thainara is 14-1. Thainara has started her UFC run 3-0 and enters as approximately a -250 favorite, with Lemos around +200.

There was also drama at Friday’s weigh-in.

Lemos initially weighed 117 pounds and then 116.5 on another attempt. She eventually returned to the scale and successfully made 115.5, allowing the fight to proceed normally.

Lemos remains one of the division’s more powerful strikers, but she has lost two consecutive fights and is trying to stop the first two-fight skid of her career. Thainara’s grappling and top control could create major problems if she survives Lemos’ early power.

The longer the fight goes, the more the matchup appears to favor Thainara.

MSB Fight Club Prediction: Alexia Thainara by unanimous decision

Ty Miller vs. Billy Ray Goff — Welterweight

Ty Miller may be one of the fighters most worth watching on Saturday.

Miller is 7-0 and will meet 9-4 Billy Ray Goff. The undefeated 26-year-old stands 6-foot-2 with a 77.5-inch reach, giving him four inches in height and approximately five inches in reach over Goff.

Miller also possesses legitimate boxing credentials and has shown the ability to throw longer combinations than many MMA fighters.

Goff is dangerous because of his aggression and finishing ability. Seven of his nine victories have come inside the distance, giving him the type of power that can instantly change a fight.

Miller entered fight day as a substantial favorite, around -425 at one sportsbook compared with +310 for Goff.

Goff must close distance without absorbing too much damage. That becomes increasingly difficult against a longer opponent with Miller’s boxing.

MSB Fight Club Prediction: Ty Miller by TKO, Round 2

Preliminary Card

Steven Asplund vs. Guilherme Pat — Heavyweight

Steven Asplund brings a 7-2 record into his heavyweight matchup against 6-1 Guilherme Pat. Asplund entered the weekend as roughly a -300 favorite.

Pat is a massive heavyweight at approximately 6-foot-6 with an 81-inch reach and earned a unanimous-decision UFC victory over Allen Frye Jr. in December 2025.

This could become a surprisingly technical heavyweight fight rather than an immediate slugfest.

Prediction: Steven Asplund by unanimous decision

Diyar Nurgozhay vs. Bruno Lopes — Light Heavyweight

Diyar Nurgozhay enters at 11-2 against Bruno Lopes, who owns a 14-3 record.

Nurgozhay is the favorite, with fight-day lines around -156 compared with +132 for Lopes. The market has also identified a Nurgozhay knockout as one of the more plausible outcomes.

Lopes has enough experience and grappling ability to make things uncomfortable, but Nurgozhay possesses the cleaner finishing upside.

Prediction: Diyar Nurgozhay by TKO, Round 2

Louie Sutherland vs. Jose Montanha da Silva — Heavyweight

Louie Sutherland enters at 11-5 against 6-1 Jose Montanha da Silva.

Sutherland is 6-foot-3 with a 76-inch reach, while Montanha stands 6-foot-4 with a 79-inch reach. Both men have high career finishing rates, setting up a fight that may not require the judges.

Sutherland is approximately a -200 favorite after the betting line moved significantly in his direction during fight week.

Heavyweight fights remain inherently volatile, but Sutherland has faced the stronger level of opposition.

Prediction: Louie Sutherland by TKO, Round 1

Manoel Sousa vs. Richie Miranda — Lightweight

This is one of the more intriguing preliminary bouts.

Manoel Sousa enters at 14-1 against the 13-1 Richie Miranda. Sousa has finished approximately 86 percent of his professional victories while Miranda owns a 62 percent finishing rate.

Sousa is the heavier favorite at roughly -265 to -300, but Miranda should not be overlooked. Miranda has the longer reach and may possess the more versatile grappling game.

Sousa’s ability to impose pressure and damage remains the difference.

Prediction: Manoel Sousa by TKO, Round 2

Miles Johns vs. Gianni Vazquez — Featherweight

This fight changed dramatically during fight week.

Johns was originally scheduled to face Jessie Rosas, but Rosas was removed on medical advice because of concern surrounding a mark on his forehead. Gianni Vazquez accepted the fight on approximately two days’ notice. Vazquez weighed 143 pounds while Johns came in at 145.5.

Johns enters at 15-5 and desperately needs a victory after three consecutive defeats. Vazquez is 14-6 and recently earned a knockout victory outside the UFC after being released following his previous short-notice appearance.

Vazquez deserves considerable respect for stepping in, but the preparation advantage belongs heavily to Johns.

Prediction: Miles Johns by unanimous decision

Juliana Miller vs. Ravena Oliveira — Women’s Flyweight

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Juliana Miller enters at 5-4 against Ravena Oliveira, who is 7-4-1. Miller is a significant favorite, with fight-week lines approaching -300.

Miller has struggled to find consistency, but her aggressive grappling presents a difficult matchup for Oliveira, who is 0-3 in the UFC and has been finished in each of her past two appearances.

Miller should look for takedowns early and make Oliveira defend from uncomfortable positions.

Prediction: Juliana Miller by submission, Round 2

GiGi Canuto vs. Carol Foro — Women’s Strawweight

The evening opens with another late addition.

GiGi Canuto took this fight on roughly four days’ notice against Carol Foro. Canuto enters at 7-1, while Foro is 9-1 and riding substantial momentum into her UFC opportunity.

Foro is the favorite, with the line sitting around -240 to -260 on fight day.

Canuto’s short-notice preparation makes a difficult debut even tougher.

Prediction: Carol Foro by unanimous decision

MSB Fight Club Take

UFC Vegas 120 does not have the name recognition of a numbered UFC pay-per-view, but the card has something potentially more valuable: several fights that could determine who matters in their respective divisions over the next year.

Salkilld has the biggest opportunity.

Beating another prospect is one thing. Beating Gamrot across a five-round main event would represent a completely different level of accomplishment. Gamrot has built his UFC career around making talented fighters uncomfortable. His wrestling, scrambling and experience provide precisely the type of examination a developing contender must eventually pass.

If Salkilld wins decisively, there will be little reason to keep him away from the lightweight elite.

Miller and Thainara have similar opportunities. Both enter Saturday with momentum and could emerge as serious names at welterweight and strawweight respectively.

Then there is Elkins.

For more than 15 years, “The Damage” became synonymous with toughness. He was rarely the most athletic fighter in the Octagon and rarely needed to be. Elkins built his career around wrestling, conditioning, perseverance and an almost absurd willingness to walk through damage.

Saturday represents his final chance to do it.

That makes UFC Vegas 120 an interesting combination of UFC generations. Elkins is closing the book on his career while fighters such as Salkilld, Miller, Thainara, del Valle and several prospects on the preliminary card are trying to write the first significant chapters of theirs.

The prelims begin at 5 p.m. Eastern, with the main card beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern on Paramount+.
