Two More Midweek Wins for Maryland

Maryland Baseball picked up two big midweek wins, as the Terps defeated VCU yesterday and Towson today. The midweek wins are crucial, as the Terps need to win every game they can to improve their chances of getting a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Yesterday, Maryland’s offense came to life in a 12-1 thrashing of VCU. Second baseman Brandon Lowe led the charge, going 2-3 with 5 RBIs. First baseman LaMonte Wade added 2 RBIs, and several other Maryland hitters contributed as well. Every starter reached base. On the mound, Zach Morris got the start and pitched well, despite not going deep into the game. Bobby Ruse took over after him, and pitched 3.1 innings, only allowing one hit. Jared Price, Brandon Casas, and Alex Robinson all pitched scoreless innings as well. The Rams struggled offensively, as Maryland pitchers only surrendered three hits.

Today, Maryland took on Towson in the Ripken Cup. In a game that went back and forth, the Terps came out with the 4-3 win. Tayler Stiles got the ball for the Terps, and the Tigers countered with Matt Golczewski. Shortstop Blake Schmidt drove in the first run of the game with a single of Golczewski in the bottom of the first. Towson answered right back with three runs off Stiles in the third inning. Maryland knotted the game when Nick Cieri and Anthony Papio drove in runs in the fourth. Tim Lewis winded up getting the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning on a single. Stiles settled in after the third, as he winded up pitching six innings and only giving up three runs. Then, a combination of local pitchers Ben Brewster and Kevin Mooney got the final nine outs, as the Terps held on to win the game.

Next up for Maryland is a weekend series against Pittsburgh.
