Final Score: Towson 1, Drexel 1
TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University women’s soccer team captured the 2026 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) North Division regular-season championship Sunday, November 1, following a 1-1 draw against Drexel at Tiger Field. Although the Tigers could not secure a victory in their regular-season finale, the result was enough to claim the division’s top seed and earn a home semifinal in the upcoming CAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Towson finished its regular season with a 9-5-3 overall record and a 6-2-1 conference mark, collecting 19 points to finish one ahead of Hofstra.
The championship represents another significant achievement for Towson’s women’s soccer program, which previously won the outright CAA regular-season championship in 2023. The Tigers entered Sunday’s contest knowing a victory or draw would secure the North Division crown. Despite conceding a late equalizer, Towson accomplished its primary objective and extended its unbeaten streak to four matches.
Towson Controls the Match but Settles for a Draw
Towson established an attacking advantage throughout Sunday’s contest, outshooting Drexel 23-9 while generating eight shots on goal. The Tigers also dominated corner-kick opportunities, holding a 9-3 advantage over the Dragons. However, Drexel goalkeeper Gracie Sullivan kept the visitors competitive with seven saves, preventing Towson from turning its offensive pressure into a larger lead.
After a scoreless opening half, Towson finally broke through in the 54th minute when Angel Reid scored her first goal of the season. Paelyn Bayer created the opportunity with a dangerous run down the left side before delivering a pass across the penalty area. Reid moved in front of a defender and directed her shot inside the left post, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
The goal appeared to put Towson in position to close its regular season with another victory. However, Drexel responded in the 78th minute when Liv Brocious received a pass from Alex Rivera and advanced toward the penalty area. Brocious finished from approximately 10 yards out, beating Towson goalkeeper Teagan Gardner to level the score at 1-1.
Neither team managed another goal during the closing minutes, leaving the Tigers with a draw that ultimately delivered the division championship. Gardner finished with four saves, while Sullivan’s seven stops helped Drexel withstand Towson’s persistent offensive pressure. The Dragons concluded their season with a 6-7-4 overall record and a 2-4-3 conference mark.
Angel Reid Delivers at a Critical Moment
Reid’s second-half goal was particularly important because it came during Towson’s final opportunity to secure the division title outright. The finish also marked her first goal of the season, giving the Tigers a timely contribution from another member of their attacking unit. Bayer earned the assist, continuing Towson’s ability to create scoring opportunities through aggressive movement along the wings.
Senior captain Sophie Thibeault also remained heavily involved in Towson’s offensive attack, leading the Tigers with six shots, including two on goal. Entering the contest, Thibeault had recorded five goals and seven assists during the season and had produced a goal contribution in eight consecutive matches. Her offensive consistency has helped Towson establish itself as one of the conference’s leading contenders.
The Tigers’ ability to generate 23 shots demonstrates their capacity to control possession and create opportunities against conference opponents. However, converting those chances will become increasingly important during the postseason, when a single missed opportunity can determine whether a team advances. Towson’s offensive production provides reason for optimism, but the Tigers will need sharper finishing against the conference’s remaining championship contenders.
A Strong Finish Positions Towson for the Postseason
Towson enters the CAA Tournament unbeaten in its final four regular-season matches, having outscored opponents 7-1 during that stretch. The Tigers also secured an important 2-0 road victory over Monmouth before facing Drexel, guaranteeing at least a share of the North Division title. Sunday’s result completed the job and ensured Towson would receive the division’s top postseason seed.
The championship also gives Towson an important scheduling advantage because the Tigers will host a conference semifinal rather than participate in the quarterfinal round. Playing at Tiger Field provides familiarity with the playing surface and eliminates the travel demands that can accompany postseason competition. Those advantages could prove valuable as Towson pursues another conference championship and an NCAA Tournament opportunity.
Towson is scheduled to host the winner of Hofstra and Stony Brook on Sunday, November 8, at Tiger Field. The matchup will determine whether the Tigers advance to the CAA championship game. With the regular-season division title secured, Towson can now focus entirely on extending its postseason run.
MSB Take: Towson Has a Legitimate Opportunity to Win the CAA Championship
Towson’s 1-1 draw against Drexel might not have been the ideal conclusion to its regular season, but the result accomplished something far more important than another victory in the standings. The Tigers secured the North Division championship, earned the top seed and positioned themselves within reach of another conference title. Their ability to finish the season with four consecutive unbeaten performances reflects a team that has developed momentum at the right time.
The most encouraging aspect of Sunday’s performance was Towson’s overwhelming advantage in offensive opportunities. Generating 23 shots and nine corner kicks demonstrates that the Tigers can consistently pressure opposing defenses. However, converting just one of those opportunities also highlights an area that must improve before the postseason.
Towson has the talent, experience and home-field advantage to make a serious run at the CAA championship. Thibeault provides an established offensive presence, while contributions from players such as Reid and Bayer give the Tigers additional attacking options. If Towson maintains its defensive discipline and improves its finishing, the program has a strong opportunity to build on its 2023 championship success.
For a program continuing to establish itself among the CAA’s leading competitors, winning the North Division represents an important accomplishment. The Tigers have already demonstrated they can compete successfully throughout the conference schedule. Their next challenge will be turning that regular-season success into postseason victories.
