Towson Volleyball Sweeps Robert Morris Behind Dominant Attack

Towson Volleyball Sweeps Robert Morris Behind Dominant Attack

The Towson Tigers bounced back in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, sweeping Robert Morris in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17, during the Tiger Invitational at SECU Arena.

Towson controlled the match offensively and at the net, finishing with a .324 hitting percentage while holding Robert Morris to .148. The Tigers collected 44 kills compared with 34 for the Colonials and dominated the blocking battle, 9-2.

The victory was particularly important after Towson opened the Tiger Invitational with a straight-set loss to Arkansas the previous night. The Tigers had battled Arkansas closely in the opening set before falling 26-24, 25-16, 25-15 in front of a Towson volleyball-record crowd of 1,161.

Pagan Powers Towson Offense

Taylor Pagan led Towson’s attack with one of her strongest performances of the tournament. Pagan recorded a match-high 16 kills while hitting an outstanding .500 and added a solo block and three digs.

Anna Rice provided another major offensive and defensive contribution with 11 kills and a team-high five blocks. Tshilanda Diouf added six kills and four blocks, while Destini Pickett contributed four kills, two service aces and seven digs.

Towson’s balanced attack helped the Tigers accumulate 58 total points compared with Robert Morris’ 39. The Tigers also held advantages in kills, 44-34; aces, 5-3; assists, 42-33; blocks, 9-2; and digs, 43-40.

Tigers Pull Away in Opening Set

The first set established the tone for the afternoon.

Towson’s offense was not yet operating at its best, hitting .152 with 11 kills and six errors on 33 attacks. The Tigers did not need a huge offensive performance because their defense completely disrupted Robert Morris.

The Colonials committed 11 attack errors while producing only eight kills on 34 attempts, resulting in a minus-.088 hitting percentage. Towson generated two separate four-point runs and another five-point run to create separation and eventually secured the opening set, 25-17.

That defensive performance allowed Towson to grab control even before its offense found another gear.

Robert Morris Pushes Towson in Second

The second set represented Robert Morris’ best opportunity to extend the match.

The Colonials dramatically improved from their opening-set struggles, recording 12 kills with only three errors and hitting .281. Towson answered with an even stronger offensive performance, producing 16 kills with three errors on 37 attacks for a .351 percentage.

Neither team managed a run longer than four points, and the set eventually reached a 21-21 tie. That was when Towson made its move.

The Tigers captured four of the final five points to close the set, 25-22, and take a commanding 2-0 match advantage.

Instead of allowing Robert Morris to steal a set after the Colonials had substantially improved offensively, Towson responded when the score was tightest.

Towson Dominates Third Set

Towson saved its best offensive volleyball for the final set.

The Tigers initially held only a one-point advantage before putting together a run that stretched the lead to 12-5. From there, Robert Morris could not overcome the deficit.

Towson hammered 17 kills with only two attack errors on 32 attempts in the third, producing a .469 hitting percentage. Robert Morris actually hit a respectable .238 with 14 kills, but Towson’s offensive efficiency proved too much to overcome.

The Tigers finished the set with another 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.

Towson’s offensive improvement throughout the match was notable. The Tigers hit .152 in the first set, increased that number to .351 in the second and exploded for a .469 mark in the third.

Moran Does a Little of Everything

Kaitlyn Moran played an important role in nearly every phase of the victory.

Moran led Towson with 25 assists, 10 digs and two service aces. Her 25-assist, 10-dig performance gave her a fourth double-double of the season.

Peyton Meyer provided another 12 assists, helping Towson finish with 42 as a team. Pickett’s seven digs ranked second behind Moran, while Kayla Zanon contributed six and Rice finished with five.

The Tigers’ work at the net was equally important. Rice led Towson with five blocks, followed by Diouf with four. Ava Drye and Malinah Purcell-Telefoni each contributed three block assists as Towson repeatedly challenged the Robert Morris attack.

Towson Controls Nearly Every Category

The final numbers demonstrate how complete Towson’s performance was.

Robert Morris’ Lauren Decker led the Colonials with 11 kills, while Addyson Butts finished with eight and Layla Todd recorded six. Kenlee Barnard distributed 28 assists and added 10 digs, while Decker also finished with 11 digs.

However, Robert Morris never found an answer for Pagan or Towson’s depth.

The Tigers had two players reach double figures in kills and five different players record at least one service ace. More importantly, Towson committed only 11 attack errors compared with 18 by Robert Morris.

Towson’s 44 kills came on 102 attacks, while Robert Morris needed 108 attacks to produce 34 kills. That efficiency gap became increasingly noticeable as the afternoon progressed.

Tigers Respond After Arkansas Loss

The victory represented a quick response from a disappointing opening night of the Tiger Invitational.

Arkansas had swept Towson Friday, but the opening set showed the Tigers could compete with the Razorbacks. Towson ultimately could not sustain that level throughout the match, with Arkansas taking control during the second and third sets.

Less than 24 hours later, Towson looked considerably sharper against Robert Morris.

Pagan’s .500 hitting percentage gave the Tigers a dependable offensive option. Rice contributed at both the net and in the attack. Moran efficiently distributed the ball while also contributing defensively, and Towson’s blocking prevented Robert Morris from establishing sustained momentum.

Rather than allowing the Arkansas loss to carry into Saturday, the Tigers produced a convincing response.

Up Next

Towson was scheduled to conclude the Tiger Invitational Sunday against Howard at SECU Arena.

The Robert Morris victory gave Towson momentum heading into that tournament finale and provided a strong example of what the Tigers can look like when their attack, blocking and defense work together.

MSB Take

Towson needed a response after Friday night’s loss to Arkansas, and the Tigers delivered one against Robert Morris.

The most encouraging part was not simply the 3-0 final. Towson improved as the match progressed. After hitting .152 in the opening set, the Tigers jumped to .351 in the second and .469 in the third. That is the kind of progression head coach Don Metil will want to see as Towson moves closer to conference play.

Pagan was outstanding with 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, but this was not a one-player victory. Rice was productive offensively while leading a dominant blocking effort, Moran recorded another double-double, and several Tigers contributed throughout the rotation.

The 9-2 blocking advantage might be the statistic that best describes the afternoon. Towson controlled the net, limited mistakes and did not allow Robert Morris to force a fourth set after the Colonials made their strongest push in the second.

After a difficult Friday night, the Tigers came back Saturday and looked much more like the balanced, efficient Towson volleyball team they want to be.
