Towson Volleyball Rolls Past Morgan State for Fourth Straight Win
Towson volleyball continued its early-season surge Sunday afternoon, sweeping Morgan State in straight sets at Hill Field House in Baltimore. The Tigers defeated the Bears 25-17, 25-21 and 25-10 to improve to 4-2 and extend their winning streak to four matches. Towson controlled the match offensively, finishing with a .425 hitting percentage while limiting Morgan State to just .071.
Sophomore Anna Rice delivered another strong performance for Towson, leading the Tigers with 11 kills on only 16 attacks. Rice also recorded a season-high five service aces, giving Morgan State problems throughout the afternoon from both the front row and service line. She has now led Towson in kills in each of the Tigers’ first six matches of the season and has established herself as the focal point of the offense.
Towson came out firing in the opening set and immediately established control of the match. The Tigers recorded 16 kills while committing only one attacking error, producing a dominant .441 hitting percentage in the frame. Taylor Pagan recorded six kills, Malinah Purcell-Telefoni added five and Rice contributed four as Towson pulled away for a 25-17 victory.
Morgan State provided its strongest challenge during the second set and built a 14-10 advantage midway through the frame. Towson responded with one of the most important stretches of the match, scoring 15 of the final 22 points to erase the deficit and claim a 25-21 victory. Purcell-Telefoni and freshman middle blocker Clara Vorel combined for five kills during the comeback, while Rice delivered two service aces, including one that finished the set.
The Tigers eliminated any possibility of a Morgan State comeback with a dominant start to the third set. Towson scored 10 of the first 11 points, quickly building a commanding advantage and taking complete control of the match. Rice produced two kills and two aces during the early run before finishing the set with four kills and three service aces as Towson cruised to a 25-10 victory.
Towson’s efficiency separated the Tigers from the Bears throughout the afternoon. The Tigers finished with 43 kills compared with Morgan State’s 26 and outhit the Bears in all three sets. Towson committed only nine attack errors on 80 attempts, allowing the Tigers to finish the afternoon with the impressive .425 hitting percentage.
Purcell-Telefoni gave Towson another productive offensive option with 10 kills and two blocks. Pagan played an important role in the opening set, while Vorel contributed at the net as Towson received production throughout its lineup. That balance prevented Morgan State from focusing exclusively on slowing Rice and made the Tigers difficult to defend.
Towson’s setters also kept the offense operating efficiently. Kaitlyn Moran and Peyton Meyer combined for 36 assists as the Tigers consistently generated quality attacking opportunities. Their distribution helped Towson turn 80 attacks into 43 kills, with the Tigers rarely allowing Morgan State to establish sustained momentum defensively.
Rice’s start to the 2026 season has been one of the biggest developments for Towson through six matches. She had accumulated 84 kills following Sunday’s victory, 38 more than any other Tiger, while hitting .369. Rice has led Towson in kills in every match this season, providing the Tigers with a reliable offensive weapon as the schedule begins to become more difficult.
The victory was Towson’s second consecutive straight-set sweep after the Tigers defeated Saint Peter’s 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16 in their home opener Saturday. Towson hit .369 in that match before improving to .425 against Morgan State less than 24 hours later. The back-to-back sweeps continued a four-match winning streak that has quickly changed the complexion of Towson’s early season.
Towson will now return home for the three-day Tiger Invitational beginning Friday, Sept. 11, at SECU Arena. The Tigers are scheduled to face Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday in what should provide a stronger test for a Towson team entering the weekend with considerable momentum. Towson has quickly found its rhythm after an uneven start to the season, and Sunday’s performance might have been the Tigers’ most complete match yet. Hitting .425 over three sets is impressive against any opponent, but doing it while committing only nine attacking errors shows how efficiently Towson played. The Tigers were aggressive without becoming reckless and never allowed Morgan State to establish control for an extended period.
Rice continues to look like the player Towson can build its offense around this season. Leading the Tigers in kills in all six matches while hitting .369 is an excellent start, but Towson is becoming more dangerous because players such as Purcell-Telefoni, Pagan and Vorel are giving the Tigers additional options. If that offensive balance continues, opponents will have a difficult time designing their defense exclusively around Rice.
The second set may have been the most encouraging part of Sunday’s sweep. Towson trailed 14-10 on the road but responded by controlling the remainder of the set instead of allowing Morgan State to extend the match. Combined with a 25-10 demolition in the third set, the Tigers showed both the ability to respond when challenged and the ability to put an opponent away when they gain momentum.
Four consecutive wins and back-to-back sweeps have Towson heading into the Tiger Invitational in excellent form. Arkansas should provide a valuable measuring stick for where the Tigers currently stand. Another strong performance against tougher competition would make Towson’s early winning streak look even more significant.
