Towson Volleyball Fends Off William & Mary in Four-Set Battle at SECU Arena

Towson University volleyball bounced back from an opening-set loss and defeated William & Mary, 3-1, Friday night at SECU Arena in Towson. The Tigers won the match 23-25, 25-21, 31-29 and 25-21, improving to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in Coastal Athletic Association play. William & Mary dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

The four-set score does not fully demonstrate how competitive the match was, as the teams combined for an incredible 40 ties. Towson ultimately separated itself with a balanced offensive attack that produced five players with at least 10 kills, while the Tigers outhit the Tribe .259 to .168. Taylor Pagan led all players with 13 kills as Towson earned an important conference victory in front of 383 fans.

William & Mary Takes Tight Opening Set

The opening set established what would become a back-and-forth night at SECU Arena. William & Mary generated several scoring runs and eventually escaped with a 25-23 victory despite Towson keeping the score close throughout the set. The Tribe finished the opening frame with 16 kills and a .190 hitting percentage, while Towson recorded 13 kills and hit .189.

Towson appeared to have seized control late when the Tigers turned a 21-17 William & Mary advantage into a 23-21 lead. The Tribe responded immediately, however, with Katherine Arnason ending Towson’s run before Sophia Van Name and Teagan Pocius helped William & Mary score the final four points. That response gave the visitors an early 1-0 advantage and forced Towson to play from behind.

Tigers Answer in Second Set

William & Mary carried its momentum into the second set and quickly built a 5-1 advantage. Towson refused to allow the deficit to grow, battling back to tie the set at six before the teams traded points throughout much of the frame. The Tigers still found themselves trailing 21-20 late, putting them in danger of falling behind two sets to none.

Instead, Towson delivered one of its most important runs of the night when the pressure was highest. The Tigers scored the final five points to turn that one-point deficit into a 25-21 victory and even the match at one set apiece. Towson did not have its best offensive set statistically, hitting .167, but its ability to close the frame completely changed the direction of the match.

Wild Third Set Changes the Match

The third set became the defining stretch of the entire contest and featured some of Towson’s best volleyball of the season. The Tigers produced 24 kills while hitting an outstanding .419, but William & Mary remained right with them behind 17 kills and a .279 hitting percentage. Towson eventually survived the marathon frame, 31-29, to take a 2-1 advantage.

Getting to that point required another comeback, as Towson trailed 24-21 with William & Mary sitting just one point away from taking the set. The Tigers answered by winning four consecutive points to move ahead 25-24, but the Tribe continued fighting and eventually created another set-point opportunity. Towson responded once again, scoring three straight points to finally finish the set at 31-29.

The ability to survive that situation was arguably the biggest difference in the match. William & Mary repeatedly put Towson under pressure, but the Tigers continued finding answers rather than allowing one difficult sequence to turn into an extended run. Winning a set after trailing 24-21 provided Towson with all the momentum it needed heading into the fourth.

Towson Finishes the Job

Towson did not produce the same offensive fireworks in the fourth set, but the Tigers did not need to because their defense and William & Mary’s attacking mistakes became decisive. Towson recorded 12 kills and hit .216 in the final frame while holding the Tribe to an .024 hitting percentage. William & Mary committed 11 attacking errors in the fourth set, allowing Towson to pull away for a 25-21 victory.

The final set completed an impressive turnaround after Towson dropped the opener. Instead of allowing William & Mary’s early success to dictate the match, the Tigers won three consecutive sets and showed an ability to execute in several late-set situations. That composure was particularly important in the second and third sets, where only a handful of points separated the teams.

Five Tigers Reach Double-Digit Kills

Towson’s offensive balance was one of the biggest stories of the victory, with five Tigers finishing in double figures in kills for the first time this season. Pagan led the group with 13, while Anna Rice and Malinah Purcell-Telefoni each recorded 11. Clara Vorel and Addison Leber added 10 kills apiece, making it difficult for William & Mary to focus its defense on one Towson attacker.

That balanced production was powered by another outstanding performance from Kaitlyn Moran, who finished with 50 assists. The total established a new career high for Moran for the third time already this season, illustrating how quickly she has continued raising her level. Rice also contributed defensively with 10 digs, completing her second double-double of the season.

Towson’s ability to spread the offense was especially valuable during the pivotal third set. Producing 24 kills in one frame while hitting .419 requires quality passing, setting and finishing throughout the lineup, rather than relying on one hot hitter. That depth ultimately became one of Towson’s biggest advantages over a William & Mary team that finished with only two players reaching double-digit kills.

Important CAA Victory for Towson

The win moved Towson to 3-2 in CAA play and gave the Tigers a needed response after consecutive road losses at Charleston. Towson had fallen 3-0 and 3-2 in those matches after previously beating Northeastern 3-1 at SECU Arena. Returning home and immediately getting back into the conference win column prevented those Charleston losses from developing into a longer skid.

Towson and William & Mary were scheduled to meet again Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena, and the rematch ultimately produced a different result. William & Mary defeated Towson 3-1 to earn its first CAA victory and snap a 21-match losing streak against the Tigers dating to 2013. The weekend split left Towson at 3-3 in conference play before its upcoming road series against Campbell.

MSB Take

Friday’s victory showed why Towson remains dangerous when its offense receives contributions throughout the lineup. Five players reaching double-digit kills is difficult for any defense to handle, and Moran’s 50 assists demonstrated just how effectively the Tigers were able to distribute their attack. The third set was particularly impressive because Towson faced a 24-21 deficit and still found a way to produce the points necessary to win a 31-29 thriller.

There are certainly areas Towson will want to clean up as CAA play progresses, especially after William & Mary came back to win Saturday’s rematch. Still, Friday’s performance demonstrated the Tigers have the offensive depth and late-set composure necessary to win difficult conference matches. If Towson can consistently reproduce the balance it showed Friday, the Tigers should remain a dangerous team as the CAA race develops.
