Towson Swimming and Diving Sweeps Georgetown for First Wins of Season

Towson University swimming and diving picked up its first victories of the 2026-27 season Friday, sweeping Georgetown in an impressive home performance at Burdick Pool. The Towson women defeated the Hoyas, 136-107, while the Tigers men’s team earned a 131-112 victory. Both teams received contributions throughout their lineups as Towson turned a competitive early-season meet into a strong statement victory.

The sweep was especially encouraging considering the quality of Georgetown’s programs entering the season. The Hoyas’ men entered the year as the reigning Big East champions, while Georgetown’s women finished third at the 2026 Big East Championships. Georgetown also came into the Towson meet looking for its first victories after both programs lost their season opener against William & Mary.

Towson Men Control the Relays

Towson’s men set the tone immediately by winning the 400-yard medley relay. Jed Garner, Harry Herrera, Benjamin Eischeid and Isak Brkanovic combined for the victory, giving the Tigers an important early boost. Towson later finished the swimming portion of the meet in similar fashion when Brkanovic, Eischeid, Stephen McDonald and Jake Wade captured the 200 freestyle relay.

Brkanovic continued his strong beginning to the season by winning the 50 freestyle for the second consecutive meet. The sophomore had also won the event in Towson’s season opener against Delaware, establishing himself as one of the Tigers’ early-season standouts in the sprint events. His contributions to two winning relays made Friday another productive all-around performance.

Garner was another major contributor, winning both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. He entered the Georgetown meet after winning the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley against Delaware, meaning he continued to establish himself as a reliable point producer for the Tigers. Garner’s combination of individual success and his role on the winning medley relay helped Towson build the depth needed to defeat Georgetown.

McMinn Earns First Collegiate Victory

One of the best moments of the meet belonged to Bill McMinn, who captured the 200 backstroke for his first collegiate individual victory. Early-season dual meets provide younger swimmers opportunities to establish themselves within a lineup, and McMinn took advantage of his opportunity against Georgetown. Adding another individual event winner also demonstrated the depth Towson showed throughout the men’s competition.

Christian Davidson added another victory by taking the 500 freestyle, his first win in that event this season. Harry Herrera remained perfect in the 200 breaststroke through the opening two meets, winning the event for the second consecutive week. Those victories helped Towson overcome a Georgetown team that received two individual wins from Holden Brown in the 200 and 100 freestyle events.

Georgetown also controlled the men’s diving events, where Keilan Phillips Liu swept the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 287.78 and 283.28, respectively. Towson’s top men’s diver was Grady Gardner, who finished fifth on both boards. Despite Georgetown’s advantage in diving, Towson’s swimming depth and relay success proved enough to secure the 131-112 team victory.

Scott Continues Outstanding Start

Addie Scott continued her impressive start to the season for Towson’s women’s team, winning both the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke against Georgetown. Scott entered the meet after winning three individual events against Delaware, taking the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle races. She also had been named the CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week after opening the season with several outstanding performances, including a personal-best 1:56.91 in the 200 freestyle that moved her to fourth in Towson history in the event.

Bjartey Gudmundsdottir provided another victory in the 50 freestyle, giving her wins in the event in each of Towson’s first two meets. Masha Netrebko earned an important milestone by winning the 200 butterfly for her first individual victory as a Tiger. Kaitlyn Besner also earned her first victory of the season by finishing first in the 500 freestyle.

Towson finished the swimming portion of the women’s competition with another victory when Gudmundsdottir, Emelia Erikson, Ava McKinney and Ryland Zuniga combined to win the 200 freestyle relay. Georgetown had opened the women’s meet by winning the 400 medley relay behind Heidi Wu, Catherine Bu, Bella Dimaculangan and Madie Malone. Towson’s ability to respond with individual victories throughout the meet and eventually take the closing relay demonstrated the Tigers’ overall depth.

Booth Alam Sweeps the Diving Boards

Lara Booth Alam delivered one of Towson’s biggest performances of the meet by sweeping the women’s diving events. Booth Alam won both the one-meter and three-meter competitions, providing the Tigers with valuable points as they built their 29-point team victory. Her performance represented a significant improvement from the season opener against Delaware, when she finished third on the three-meter board and fourth on the one-meter board.

Towson also received a strong performance from Marin Ford, who placed third in the one-meter competition for her first top-three finish of the season. Georgetown’s Michelle Baumbach finished second in the one-meter event with 231.30 points and third on the three-meter board with 239.63 points. Mia Williams placed second in the three-meter competition with 241.28 points, but Booth Alam’s sweep gave Towson the headline performance in the women’s diving competition.

Tigers Pick Up Important Early-Season Sweep

Friday’s victories gave both Towson programs their first team wins after beginning the season against Delaware. More importantly, the Tigers demonstrated that their success could come from several areas of the lineup rather than depending on one or two swimmers. Towson received victories from experienced standouts, emerging contributors and relay teams, while the women’s squad also received a dominant performance from Booth Alam on the boards.

The performances also offered an encouraging early indication for programs coming off successful 2025-26 seasons. Towson’s men finished second at the CAA Championships last season, while the women’s team placed third, and head coach Anthony Bruno was named CAA Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year. Diving coach Sergey Meshcherskiy also earned both the men’s and women’s CAA Diving Coach of the Year honors.

Towson had little time to celebrate the Georgetown sweep because the Tigers traveled to Philadelphia the following day to face La Salle in their first road dual meet of the season. The Tigers ultimately swept that meet as well, completing a 4-0 weekend between the men’s and women’s programs. Towson’s women won 12 of 14 swimming events against La Salle, while the men captured 10 of 14, turning the Georgetown victories into the beginning of an outstanding weekend.

MSB Take

Towson could not have asked for a much better response after opening the season without a team victory against Delaware. Georgetown presented a legitimate early-season challenge, particularly with the Hoyas’ men’s program coming off a Big East championship, but Towson showed superior depth across numerous events. Getting the first victories of the season at home while seeing several different athletes contribute should give both Tiger programs plenty of confidence moving forward.

Scott already looks capable of putting together another excellent season, while Brkanovic, Garner and Herrera have quickly established themselves as dependable winners on the men’s side. Booth Alam’s sweep of the diving boards was equally important because Towson will need points from both swimming and diving when the competition becomes tougher later in the season. If the Tigers continue getting this level of production throughout the lineup, both programs should again be serious factors when championship season arrives.
