Towson Opens 2026 Season With Important CAA Matchup Against Maine
The Towson Tigers will not have much time to ease into the 2026 college football season.
Towson opens the year Thursday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium against the Maine Black Bears in a Coastal Athletic Association matchup that could have implications on the conference standings months down the road.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The game is Towson’s annual Gold Rush game, with the first 2,000 fans scheduled to receive a Gold Rush jersey.
The matchup will be televised locally on Monumental Sports Network and streamed through FloCollege.
Both programs enter the season looking to take the next step after finishing 6-6 in 2025. Towson went 4-4 in CAA play, while Maine recovered from an 0-4 beginning to the season by winning six consecutive games before dropping its final two contests.
Towson was picked sixth in the CAA preseason coaches poll with 93 points. Maine came in directly behind the Tigers in seventh with 88.
That makes Thursday night far more than a normal season opener.
Towson and Maine are two teams expected to occupy a similar part of the conference standings, and one will leave Week 0 already holding an important head-to-head CAA victory.
Andrew Indorf Takes Control of Towson Offense
There may not be a more important player for Towson this season than quarterback Andrew Indorf.
Indorf won Towson’s starting quarterback job as a true freshman last season and responded by completing 59.6 percent of his passes for 2,344 yards, 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
He was named CAA Co-Offensive Rookie of the Year and finished 15th in voting for the Jerry Rice Award, which recognizes the top freshman in the FCS.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Indorf’s freshman season was his ability to avoid major mistakes.
Towson threw only four interceptions as a team last year, the fewest in the CAA.
Indorf is now one of six permanent captains for Towson, showing how quickly he has become the leader of Pete Shinnick’s offense.
The next step is turning an impressive freshman year into a breakout sophomore campaign.
That challenge begins against a good Maine defense.
The Black Bears allowed only 325.1 total yards per game last season, the best mark in the CAA. Maine also allowed 24.1 points per game and registered 29 sacks.
Towson will need its offensive line to keep Indorf comfortable.
Senior KJ Brooks leads that group after earning Preseason All-CAA honors. Brooks started all 12 games last year and has developed into one of the most important players on Towson’s offense.
If Towson gives Indorf time, the Tigers should have opportunities through the air.
Towson Needs More From Running Game
One of Towson’s biggest areas for improvement is the running game.
The Tigers averaged only 105.8 rushing yards per game last season and 3.6 yards per carry.
Kemarrion Battles returns after rushing for 374 yards and three touchdowns on 81 carries. He averaged 4.6 yards per attempt and also caught 16 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Towson has also added more options to the backfield, including Wingate transfer Xavier Pugh.
Establishing the run Thursday would make Indorf considerably more dangerous.
Maine cannot be allowed to sit back in coverage and concentrate entirely on Towson’s passing game. Even if the Tigers do not pile up 200 rushing yards, they need enough production on the ground to create manageable third downs and make play-action effective.
That becomes particularly important against a disciplined Maine defense.
Maine Will Try to Control the Line of Scrimmage
Towson’s defense should know exactly what Maine wants to establish.
The Black Bears return four starters along their offensive line, led by Preseason All-American tackle Anthony Iliano and Preseason All-CAA selection Andrew Kocan.
Maine allowed just 18 sacks last season.
The Black Bears also bring back running back Rashawn Marshall, who was named a Freshman All-American after a productive 2025 season.
Marshall rushed for 684 yards on 128 carries, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt, and scored four rushing touchdowns. He added 21 receptions for 147 yards and another touchdown.
Expect Maine to give Marshall opportunities early.
That is an important matchup for Towson because the Tigers struggled against the run last year.
Towson allowed 171.5 rushing yards per game and surrendered 28 rushing touchdowns.
Forcing Maine into obvious passing situations would be a major victory for the Tigers defense.
Towson Gets First Look at Eddie Buehler
The biggest unknown on Maine’s offense is at quarterback.
Redshirt sophomore Eddie Buehler won the starting job during training camp and will make his first collegiate appearance Thursday night.
Buehler did not play during the 2024 or 2025 seasons.
That creates a significant opportunity for Towson.
Maine’s experienced offensive line should make life easier on its new quarterback, but there is no substitute for playing in an actual college football game, especially on the road against a conference opponent.
Towson should make Buehler uncomfortable from the beginning.
The Tigers do not necessarily need to blitz constantly. Stopping Marshall and creating third-and-long situations could put considerable pressure on Maine’s inexperienced quarterback.
Towson also needs to make him prove he can consistently beat the secondary downfield.
Maine lost its top two receivers from last season, Scott Woods and Mo Irefin, leaving an inexperienced receiving group around Buehler.
That makes the battle at the line of scrimmage even more important.
If Maine is consistently gaining four or five yards on first down, the Black Bears can protect their quarterback.
If Towson shuts down the run, the entire game changes.
Players to Watch for Towson
Andrew Indorf, QB
Indorf is the centerpiece of the offense after throwing for 2,344 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions as a freshman.
Kemarrion Battles, RB
Towson needs more balance offensively, and Battles should receive an opportunity to establish himself as one of the Tigers’ primary backs.
KJ Brooks, OL
Brooks is Towson’s lone Preseason All-CAA selection and will play a major role in protecting Indorf.
Shamir Boyd, DL
Boyd is one of Towson’s defensive captains and will be involved in the Tigers’ effort to slow Maine’s running game.
Ben Kumpon, LB
Kumpon recorded 33 tackles as a freshman and has already been named a permanent captain entering his sophomore season.
Players to Watch for Maine
Rashawn Marshall, RB
Marshall may be Maine’s biggest offensive weapon. Towson cannot allow him to establish the running game early.
Eddie Buehler, QB
Everything surrounding Maine’s quarterback will be worth watching. This will be his first college game action.
Anthony Iliano, OL
The Preseason All-American helps anchor an experienced Maine offensive line.
Chris Bacon, DL
Bacon recorded 35 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks last season and enters 2026 as a Preseason All-CAA defender.
Jamaree Gibson, DB
Gibson recorded 34 tackles and five pass breakups in 2025 and gives Maine experience in the secondary against Indorf.
Three Keys for Towson
1. Stop Marshall
Towson cannot allow Maine to control the game on the ground.
Make Buehler win the game with his arm.
2. Protect Indorf
Maine had one of the CAA’s strongest defenses last season. Keeping Towson’s quarterback clean will give the Tigers opportunities to create explosive plays.
3. Win the Turnover Battle
Indorf was outstanding at protecting the football last season.
Against two evenly matched teams, one interception, fumble or short field could decide the game.
Series History
Thursday will be the first meeting between Towson and Maine since 2019.
Towson won that matchup 45-23 in Orono in a battle between two nationally ranked teams.
Maine actually produced 469 yards of offense in that game, but Towson forced four interceptions and turned the turnovers into 21 points.
Seven years later, the Tigers and Black Bears finally meet again.
Difficult Schedule Makes Fast Start Important
Towson cannot afford to look beyond Maine.
After Thursday, the Tigers face back-to-back FBS road games against Navy on Sept. 5 and South Carolina on Sept. 12.
Towson then returns home Sept. 19 against Morgan State.
Starting 1-0 would give the Tigers momentum before an extremely difficult two-game stretch.
Starting 0-1 would mean Towson already has a conference loss before facing Navy and South Carolina.
That makes Thursday one of the most important season openers Towson has played in several years.
MSB Prediction
This looks like a close football game.
Maine should be able to run the football behind its veteran offensive line, and its defense is good enough to keep Towson from turning the game into a shootout.
The difference could be quarterback experience.
Indorf has already started 12 college games and showed unusual poise for a freshman last season. Buehler will be making his first collegiate appearance.
At home, that gives Towson an advantage.
Look for Maine to make things difficult early before Indorf finds enough opportunities in the second half to push the Tigers ahead.
Towson 27, Maine 20
MSB Take
This is exactly the type of game Towson needs to win if the Tigers want to become a legitimate contender in the CAA.
Maine is not an easy opponent. The Black Bears have a strong offensive line, a talented running back and one of the better defenses in the conference.
But Towson has the more experienced quarterback and gets the game at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
I am especially interested to see how much Indorf has improved.
Throwing 16 touchdowns against only four interceptions as a true freshman was impressive. If he takes another significant step this season, Towson could be better than its sixth-place preseason projection.
The biggest concern is the run defense.
Maine has exactly the type of offensive personnel that can expose Towson if last season’s problems have not been corrected. The Tigers cannot spend Thursday night allowing Marshall to continually pick up five and six yards at a time.
Make Maine’s new quarterback throw the ball.
If Towson does that, protects Indorf and avoids turnovers, the Tigers should begin the 2026 season 1-0.
For a team with Navy and South Carolina waiting immediately afterward, getting that first victory would be huge.
