South Carolina Stingrays Name Forward Cam Morrison Captain After Four Games

The South Carolina Stingrays have named forward Cam Morrison captain after he recorded three goals and one assist through four games with the ECHL club. Morrison joined South Carolina on loan from the Hershey Bears on September 28 after signing with the American Hockey League team during the summer.

Morrison is a native of Aurora, Ontario, and played for the Stavanger Oilers of the EHL in Norway last season. He has played five seasons between the American Hockey League and ECHL, giving the South Carolina Stingrays a captain with experience at both levels.

Cam Morrison Brings Professional Experience

Morrison recorded 27 points, including 13 goals and 14 assists, in 35 games for the Kansas City Mavericks during the 2024-25 season. He previously spent two seasons split between the Charlotte Checkers and Florida Everblades.

The Colorado Avalanche selected Morrison in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career with the Rockford IceHogs after a four-year career at the University of Notre Dame.

Morrison has recorded 50 points, including 26 goals and 24 assists, in 63 ECHL games. He also has 41 points, including 18 goals and 23 assists, in 123 American Hockey League games.

South Carolina Announces Alternate Captains

South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jesse Kallechy said Morrison stood out among the team’s leaders. “We have a lot of leaders in the room, but I think [Morrison] was certainly one of the standout guys,” Kallechy said. “He was the guy that all his teammates felt like he was the unquestioned leader and standard setter for our team. He made it a pretty easy choice. It is a huge honor to wear the ‘C’ for the Stingrays and I know it is something that he will embrace and his teammates will follow.”

Morrison said becoming captain was an honor. “It is a huge honor, and it is something I take a lot of pride in,” Morrison said. “We have a great group of guys, top down throughout the organization. It is exciting. I think we have a good squad this year, so hopefully we can make a good run. I am honored to be named the captain.”

Ryan Sandelin and Josh Wilkins will serve as alternate captains when the South Carolina Stingrays wear white sweaters. Zack Andrusiak and Luke Prokop will serve as alternate captains with the navy sweaters, while Jalen Luypen and Connor Moore will serve in that role when the team wears red jerseys.

The South Carolina Stingrays are an ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the AHL’s Hershey Bears. The team will return to the North Charleston Coliseum on October 30 for Emo Night against the Savannah Ghost Pirates at 7:05 p.m.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Cam Morrison’s early production and professional experience support the South Carolina Stingrays’ decision to name him captain. His four points through four games give him an immediate on-ice contribution, while his experience in the ECHL and American Hockey League adds context to his new leadership role.
