Smith Ties Towson Record, Sits Eighth After Two Rounds at Nittany Lion Invitational

Towson women’s golf freshman Tatyana Smith delivered one of the best rounds in program history Monday at the Nittany Lion Invitational, firing a 5-under second round to climb into a tie for eighth place individually. Smith finished the first 36 holes at 3-under par, while Towson sat in 16th place as a team at 36-over. The Tigers opened the tournament with a 25-over first round before improving by 13 strokes with a 12-over second round.

Smith’s second round was nearly flawless. She did not record a bogey over the entire 18 holes and played the back nine under par for the second consecutive round. Her 5-under score tied the Towson women’s golf program record for lowest single-round score, giving the freshman an immediate place in the Tigers’ record book early in her collegiate career.

The Pikesville, Maryland, native also showed consistency throughout the opening day. Smith finished tied for sixth in the field at 4-under on par-five holes and was tied for eighth in total birdies with eight through two rounds. She recovered well after an early bogey in the opening round, making birdie on the 10th hole and continuing to play the back nine effectively.

Towson’s overall performance improved significantly in the second round. The Tigers’ 12-over team score was the 13th-best second-round total in the field after they had sat in 17th place following the opening 18 holes. Every Towson golfer recorded at least one birdie during the second round, and every Tiger played holes one and six at par or better.

Grace Oristian helped the Tigers’ improvement with one of Towson’s better second-round efforts. Oristian opened the back nine with a birdie on the 10th hole, while Ahika Jani also provided an early highlight by birdieing the par-five ninth hole during the opening round. Those performances helped Towson stabilize after a difficult first round and move one position higher in the team standings.

Smith’s performance was even more notable because of her youth. She is a freshman from Pikesville who attended Bryn Mawr School, making the record-tying round one of her first major collegiate performances for Towson. She is part of a 2026-27 roster that also includes veterans such as Oristian, Luciana Calbimonte and Kalyn Doss, giving the Tigers a mix of experience and young talent.

The Nittany Lion Invitational is Towson’s opening tournament of the 2026-27 season and is one of four fall events on the Tigers’ schedule. Towson will later compete in the Duquesne Dukes Fall Invitational, Navy Fall Invitational and Lehigh Invitational before turning its attention to the spring portion of the schedule and ultimately the CAA Championships in April.

Towson wrapped up the tournament Tuesday, with Oristian shooting an even-par final round and climbing 12 spots on the individual leaderboard. Smith endured a tougher third round but steadied herself late, making par on her final eight holes, while still finishing the tournament tied for fifth in par-five scoring at 3-under. Towson ultimately finished 16th as a team at 59-over.

MSB Take

Smith’s record-tying second round is exactly the type of early-season performance Towson can build around. Shooting 5-under without a single bogey is impressive for any college golfer, but doing it as a freshman in one of the first tournaments of the season makes it even more significant. Smith showed both scoring ability and composure, especially on the back nine and the par fives.

Towson clearly has room to improve as a team after finishing 16th, but the 13-stroke improvement from the first round to the second shows the Tigers can adjust quickly. That matters over multi-round tournaments, where one poor opening round can sometimes derail an entire weekend. Towson instead responded with a much stronger second 18 and showed better consistency throughout the lineup.

Smith is the biggest takeaway from the tournament. A freshman immediately tying a program scoring record gives Towson a potential difference-maker to develop over the next several seasons. If Smith can turn performances like this into consistent scoring while the veteran golfers stabilize the lineup, the Tigers could make significant progress as the fall schedule continues.
