No. 3 Salisbury defeated No. 9 Messiah 3-2 in double overtime Saturday evening at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Devon DeGregory scored the winning penalty stroke in the second overtime period as Salisbury improved to 4-0.
Salisbury trailed 2-1 late in regulation before Dakotah Trader scored with 1.7 seconds remaining to force overtime. DeGregory and Layla Kent assisted on the tying goal, then DeGregory converted the deciding penalty stroke.
Salisbury Forces Overtime in Final Seconds
Messiah opened the scoring when Addie Weiler finished a play assisted by Aubrey Clark. Salisbury answered in the third quarter when Alex Kupper scored with an assist from Regan Worley, but Messiah regained the lead four minutes later on Naomi Lyter’s goal, assisted by Weiler.
Salisbury created three penalty corners inside the final 20 seconds of regulation. On the final chance, Ryan Lowe took the shot and Trader deflected it past Messiah goalkeeper Joy Lippert with 1.7 seconds remaining, tying the game at 2-2.
DeGregory Delivers in Second Overtime
Neither team scored in the first overtime period. Messiah nearly ended the game in the second overtime, but Salisbury goalkeeper Maddie Castaneda made a kick save on Weiler’s attempt.
Salisbury then moved into the circle, where Tessa Gray was fouled on a clear scoring chance. DeGregory took the resulting penalty stroke and scored to complete the 3-2 victory.
Castaneda made three saves, including the critical stop in the second overtime period. Salisbury outshot Messiah 19-9 overall and held a 10-2 advantage in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Salisbury Hosts Johns Hopkins Next
The victory was Salisbury’s first overtime win since a 1-0 victory over Washington College on Sept. 3, 2025. Kupper and Trader each scored their second goals of the season, while Worley and Kent recorded assists.
Salisbury will host No. 4 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
