Red Sox Strike Early, Hand Orioles 6-3 Loss as Baltimore’s Catching Woes Continue
BOSTON — The Baltimore Orioles dropped the second game of their series against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-3 at Fenway Park after Boston jumped out to an early four-run lead. The loss came on another difficult day for Baltimore, which also placed rookie catcher Samuel Basallo on the 10-day injured list before first pitch because of right shoulder inflammation.
Baltimore entered the day already without Adley Rutschman, and the loss of Basallo leaves the Orioles extremely thin behind the plate. Basallo had been one of the club’s brightest young contributors this season, and the Orioles will now hope his stay on the injured list is a short one. Johnathan Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in the corresponding roster move.
Boston wasted little time putting pressure on Orioles starter Dean Kremer. The Red Sox scored four runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Caleb Durbin and a two-run triple by Jarren Duran. That early outburst proved to be the difference.
Kremer settled down after the rocky first but finished with six runs allowed over six innings as the Orioles were forced to play from behind for the remainder of the afternoon.
Baltimore actually collected more hits than Boston but struggled to deliver timely hits with runners on base. The Orioles scratched across three runs but could never put together the big inning needed to erase the early deficit.
Boston rookie Jake Bennett kept Baltimore’s offense under control through 5 2/3 innings before turning the game over to a bullpen that shut the door. Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock, and Aroldis Chapman combined to finish the victory for the Red Sox.
The defeat continues a frustrating stretch for Baltimore against a Boston club that has been playing some of the best baseball in the American League. While the Orioles continue to battle for postseason positioning, injuries have become an increasing concern, particularly behind the plate.
Basallo Injury Creates Major Concern
The biggest news of the day may have occurred before the first pitch.
Basallo, who exited Sunday’s game with shoulder discomfort, was officially placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The 21-year-old rookie has become an important part of Baltimore’s lineup this season, providing power and production while splitting catching duties.
With both Basallo and Rutschman unavailable, the Orioles will rely on their organizational depth until one of their catchers returns.

The Orioles cannot continue spotting quality teams early leads. Boston took advantage immediately, and Baltimore spent the entire afternoon trying to climb back into the game.
