Ravens position analysis: Tight Ends

Crockett Gillmore: photo by the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens had trouble with the tight ends production last season when they missed Dennis Pitta for most of the season.  This off season the Ravens went out if their way to bulk up the tight end position.  The Ravens signed Dennis Pitta to a five-year deal and signed veteran tight end Owen Daniels.  The Ravens also spent a third-round pick on Crockett Gillmore.

To me the tight end position is pretty clear cut the Ravens only have four tight ends on their current roster and generally teams carry three of them.

Here is my Ravens tight end depth chart and analysis.

1.  Dennis Pitta: The Ravens offense truly is not the same without Pitta.  When Pitta was out last season Joe Flacco was lacking his go to receiver.   Flacco and Pitta have a good bond on and off the field.  Pitta will line up a lot at wide receiver and I have a feeling Pitta will have a career year in 2014. Pitta is a decent blocker and an outstanding pass catcher.   Check out Dennis Pitta’s player profile for more.

2.  Owen Daniels: Daniels will most likely be the Ravens number two tight end.  Daniels is an older player and has had injury issues but I think if healthy he should have a good season.  Daniels already knows Gary Kubiak’s system.   Daniels is very similar to Pitta as both are good pass catchers.  I think Daniels will be an upgrade from Dallas Clark.  Health is the biggest key for Daniels.

3.  Crockett Gillmore: The Ravens drafted Gillmore in the third round and there is no doubt that he will make the Ravens roster.  Gillmore will likely be the Ravens blocking tight end as the Ravens develope him.  Gillmore has good hands and great size but still needs to work on his route running.  Kubiak has done a good job at devolving tight ends.

4.  Phillip Supernaw: Supernaw is a long shot to make the Ravens roster.  Supernaw has good size and a year of experience but unless the Ravens have an injury I doubt he makes the roster.

5. Nathan Overbay: Another long shot to make the roster Overbay is a huge tight end at 270 pounds.
