Phillies 5, Nationals 0: Luzardo Dominates as Washington’s Skid Reaches Seven

The Washington Nationals continued to search for answers Tuesday night, but Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo made sure they never found any.
Luzardo threw eight brilliant scoreless innings, while trade deadline acquisition Luis Arraez made an immediate impact in his Phillies debut as Philadelphia blanked the Nationals 5-0 at Citizens Bank Park. The loss extended Washington’s losing streak to seven games and dropped the Nationals to 55-60 on the season.
Luzardo in Complete Control
Washington had few opportunities against Luzardo, who turned in one of his best outings of the season.
The left-hander worked eight scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, walking two, and striking out seven over 98 pitches. He consistently got ahead in the count and never allowed the Nationals to build any sustained offensive pressure.
Caleb Kilian pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his Phillies debut to finish off Philadelphia’s major league-leading 15th shutout of the season.
Arraez Sparks Philadelphia Offense
Fresh off his trade to Philadelphia, Luis Arraez wasted no time making an impact.
Arraez collected two hits, drove in two runs, and scored once in his Phillies debut. He delivered an RBI single in the first inning before adding another RBI knock in the third.
Former National Trea Turner also had a huge night, collecting three hits and scoring twice, while Justin Crawford added a hit, stole a base, and crossed the plate during a balanced offensive performance.
Nationals Forced to Play Catch-Up Early
The Nationals’ night got off to a difficult start when starter Carson Palmquist exited after facing only four batters.
Reliever Zack Littell was forced into early action and gave Washington valuable innings, but Philadelphia gradually built its lead. The Phillies scored in the first inning before adding two more in the third and another in the seventh to steadily pull away.
Offense Never Gets Going
Washington managed only four hits and was unable to capitalize on its limited opportunities.
The Nationals’ best chance came when Nasim Nuñez opened the eighth inning with a single, but Luzardo retired the next three hitters to preserve the shutout before turning the ball over to Kilian.
It marked another frustrating offensive performance during the club’s current losing streak.
James Wood Leaves With Injury
The night became even more concerning for Washington when standout outfielder James Wood exited with an apparent oblique injury. Losing one of the club’s top offensive players would be another significant blow for a Nationals team already struggling to generate runs.

The Nationals continue to battle hard, but the offense has gone cold at the wrong time. Philadelphia’s revamped lineup looked energized with Luis Arraez immediately fitting into the top of the order, while Jesús Luzardo completely controlled the game from the mound. Washington needs its young core to rediscover its offensive rhythm quickly, and the health of James Wood now becomes one of the biggest storylines to watch. With seven straight losses, the Nationals are in danger of seeing the season slip away unless they can reverse the momentum in the remainder of the series.
