Oristian’s Even-Par Final Round Leads Towson at Nittany Lion Invitational
Grace Oristian closed the Nittany Lion Invitational with an even-par final round Tuesday as the Towson women’s golf team completed its first tournament of the 2026-27 season at the Penn State Blue Course. Oristian’s strong closing round allowed the senior to climb 12 positions on the individual leaderboard while Towson finished 16th among 18 teams. The Tigers posted rounds of 313, 300 and 310 to finish at 923, 59-over par, over the three-round tournament.
Oristian recovered almost immediately from a bogey to begin her final round and settled into an impressive stretch of consistent golf. She responded on her second hole and then played par or better on each of her next 14 holes, ultimately playing the front nine at 1-under. Oristian finished par or better on 16 of the 18 holes, providing Towson with its best individual round of the day.
Freshman Tatyana Smith also completed an encouraging collegiate debut despite running into trouble during the final round. Smith had entered Tuesday tied for eighth at 3-under after producing a spectacular 5-under second-round performance Monday that tied Towson’s program record for lowest single-round score. After a difficult portion of Tuesday’s round, Smith settled down and finished with eight consecutive pars, showing composure after the early adversity.
Smith’s overall tournament numbers remained impressive despite the tougher finish. She ended the Nittany Lion Invitational tied for fifth in the field in par-five scoring at 3-under and joined Oristian among the competitors with the fewest double bogeys, recording only one during the tournament. Smith’s record-tying second round, which included no bogeys, gave Towson one of the biggest individual highlights of the season-opening event.
Towson received contributions throughout the lineup during the final round, with four Tigers recording at least one birdie. Every Towson golfer also played the second and 12th holes at par or better Tuesday, giving the Tigers several positive stretches even though the overall team score increased from Monday’s second round. Towson had shown its strongest team golf during that second round, improving from a 25-over opening round to 12-over over the next 18 holes.
The tournament featured a strong 18-team field, with Virginia Tech ultimately winning at 20-under with a three-round score of 844. Maryland finished second at 15-under, five shots behind the Hokies, while Harvard and Penn State tied for third at 11-under. Virginia Tech senior Valentine Delon captured the individual championship at 13-under and set a tournament scoring record.
Towson finished ahead of Duquesne and Saint Joseph’s in the final team standings. The Tigers’ 923 total placed them seven shots behind 15th-place Seton Hall and 25 shots behind Youngstown State in 14th. While the final team position leaves room for improvement, Towson came away from its season opener with standout rounds from both Oristian and Smith and a clearer picture of what the lineup can become this fall.
Towson will have several weeks to prepare for its next competition. The Tigers travel to Pittsburgh for the Duquesne Dukes Fall Invitational on Sept. 28-29, the second of four tournaments on Towson’s fall schedule. The Tigers will then compete at the Navy Fall Invitational in Annapolis on Oct. 3-4 before concluding the fall portion of the schedule at the Lehigh Invitational on Oct. 26-27.

Oristian’s final round was exactly the type of veteran performance Towson needed to finish the tournament on a positive note. Shooting even par while making par or better on 16 holes shows the consistency that can anchor a lineup throughout a season. Her ability to recover immediately from an opening bogey and climb 12 spots also demonstrated the value of having an experienced senior in the lineup.
Smith remains the biggest long-term takeaway from Towson’s season opener. A freshman tying the program’s single-round record with a 5-under round in her first tournament is significant, and the way she responded to trouble in the final round by making eight straight pars was encouraging as well. There will naturally be ups and downs for a freshman golfer, but Smith already showed that her ceiling is extremely high.
Towson has work to do after finishing 16th, but this tournament also provided several building blocks. Oristian gives the Tigers a dependable veteran presence, while Smith immediately looks capable of producing low rounds that can change Towson’s position on a leaderboard. If the rest of the lineup becomes more consistent before the Duquesne Invitational, Towson should have an opportunity to make a noticeable jump in its second tournament.
