Orioles Hammer Rays 11-2 to Complete Statement Sweep at Camden Yards
The Baltimore Orioles did not just beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. They overwhelmed the best team in the American League from the opening inning and finished off a dominant three-game sweep with an 11-2 rout at Camden Yards.

A week after Tampa Bay swept Baltimore at Tropicana Field, the Orioles answered with their most complete series of the season. Power, pitching, defense and relentless offense all showed up again Wednesday night.
Gunnar Henderson Sets the Tone Early
The Orioles wasted no time attacking Rays starter Steven Matz.
Taylor Ward opened the bottom of the first with a single, and two batters later Gunnar Henderson crushed a two-run homer to right field. Camden Yards erupted immediately as Baltimore jumped ahead 2-0.
Baltimore kept pouring it on.
Adley Rutschman and Coby Mayo reached base, Leody Taveras lined an RBI single, and Blaze Alexander ripped a two-run single to cap a five-run opening inning. Ten Orioles came to the plate before Tampa Bay could finally escape the frame.
Henderson struck again in the sixth inning with another towering solo blast to right-center field, his second homer of the night and his 13th of the season.
The Orioles shortstop looked like the superstar Baltimore expects him to become every night. Beyond the offense, Henderson also flashed elite defense with a difficult throw deep in the hole that stranded the bases loaded during Tampa Bay’s only real threat against Trey Gibson.
Blaze Alexander Delivers a Career Night
While Henderson grabbed headlines with the two home runs, Blaze Alexander authored the biggest offensive night of his young career.
Alexander finished with six RBIs, a double, a homer and multiple clutch hits from the bottom of the lineup.
The Orioles infielder started the scoring barrage with a two-run single in the first inning. Then in the fifth, Alexander lined a two-run double into left field to stretch the lead to 8-0.
In the seventh inning, Alexander put the exclamation point on the sweep with a two-run homer to left-center field for his first homer of the season.
Baltimore has searched all season for consistent production from the lower half of the lineup. Alexander gave them exactly that Wednesday night.
Trey Gibson Looks Calm Beyond His Years
The Orioles also received a massive boost from rookie starter Trey Gibson.
Making only the third appearance of his major league career, Gibson attacked Tampa Bay hitters with confidence and composure. The rookie carried a shutout into the sixth inning and finished with 5 2/3 innings of one-run baseball to earn his first major league victory.
Gibson mixed his sinker and slider effectively throughout the night while Baltimore’s defense backed him with three double plays. Tampa Bay struggled to square him up consistently, and the rookie never looked rattled despite facing one of baseball’s best offenses.
The Rays finally scratched across a run in the sixth inning on a force out by Ryan Vilade, but Gibson had already put the Orioles firmly in command.
Baltimore desperately needed length from its starter after recent bullpen usage, and Gibson delivered exactly that.
Coby Mayo Continues to Produce
Coby Mayo continued another strong stretch at the plate and played a major role in Baltimore’s offensive avalanche.
Mayo scored three runs and constantly pressured Tampa Bay pitching throughout the night.
The young slugger reached base early during the five-run first inning, later scored again in the third, and consistently found himself in the middle of rallies. Tyler O’Neill drove Mayo home with an RBI single in the third inning as Baltimore extended the lead to 6-0.
Baltimore’s lineup suddenly looks much deeper when Mayo contributes alongside Henderson, Rutschman and Alonso.
Orioles Flip the Script on Tampa Bay
The sweep carried extra meaning for Baltimore.
Just last week, the Rays handled the Orioles in Tampa Bay and exposed many of Baltimore’s flaws. This week looked completely different. The Orioles outplayed Tampa Bay in every phase over three straight games.
The Orioles outscored the Rays 26-10 during the series and handed Tampa Bay its first sweep of the season.
Baltimore suddenly has momentum again after an inconsistent start to the year. The offense looks alive, the young pitching continues to develop and Gunnar Henderson appears fully locked in at the plate.
If the Orioles play with this kind of energy and aggressiveness moving forward, the AL East race may become much more interesting over the summer.
