Orioles call up pitcher Albert Suarez, will start Wednesday against Twins

The Baltimore Orioles were left without a starting pitcher after placing Tyler Wells on IL. Wells was supposed to start the series finale against the Twins on Wednesday afternoon. There was uncertainty coming into today on who would start, but that question has now been answered.

The Orioles will look to RHP Albert Suarez for the start. Suarez signed a minor league deal with the team back in September 2023, and he started the year in AAA Norfolk. Suarez currently has a record of 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA in three games for the Norfolk Tides in 2024. He hasn’t pitched in professional baseball since 2018, and he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2017.

Suarez was 0-3 with a 5.12 ERA in 18 games for the San Francisco Giants in 2018. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected him with the 14th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut with the Giants in 2016 after Arizona traded him.

This comes as a surprise to many fans across Baltimore. The team probably won’t expect him to go very far given his lack of experience. Expect the Oriole bullpen to be used heavily with an off-day on the horizon tomorrow.
