While this is not the blockbuster trade many Orioles fans have been waiting for, it is a practical move that gives Baltimore a proven major league catcher capable of handling a pitching staff during an important stretch of the season.
Jake Rogers Brings Experience Behind the Plate
Rogers, 31, has spent his entire six-year Major League career with Detroit after originally being drafted by the Houston Astros in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft before being traded to the Tigers in the Justin Verlander deal.
Although his offensive numbers have dipped this season, Rogers has built a reputation as one of baseball’s stronger defensive catchers.

Detroit receives right-handed reliever Zane Barnhart, one of Baltimore’s upper-level bullpen prospects.
Barnhart is a Towson native who pitched collegiately at Hillsdale College before being selected by the Orioles in the 17th round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
This season he has primarily worked out of the bullpen at Double-A Chesapeake.

For the Orioles, the timing makes perfect sense.
With both Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo still unavailable, the organization desperately needed a catcher who has experience handling a Major League pitching staff. Rogers is not being asked to carry the offense—he simply needs to provide stability behind the plate until Baltimore gets healthy.
If Rogers can rediscover even some of the power that produced 31 home runs over the 2023 and 2024 seasons while continuing to provide solid defense, this could quietly become one of the more underrated depth acquisitions of the trade deadline.
For a team still trying to stay in the postseason race, dependable catching was becoming a necessity rather than a luxury. The Orioles addressed that need without sacrificing one of their premier prospects, making this a low-risk move that fills an immediate hole on the roster.
