Orioles 3, Angels 1: Povich Shines, Alonso Delivers as Baltimore Snaps Offensive Drought

The Baltimore Orioles returned home Tuesday night looking to put an ugly stretch behind them, and behind a dominant outing from Cade Povich and timely hitting from Pete Alonso, they did exactly that.
Povich tossed six scoreless innings in his first major league appearance in nearly three months, while Alonso’s two-run single proved to be the difference as the Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Baltimore improved to 55-58 on the season and halted a two-game losing streak after being shut out in each of its previous two contests.
Povich Returns in Dominant Fashion
Making his first start since returning to the majors, Povich looked comfortable from the opening inning despite allowing traffic on the bases.
The left-hander worked six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits, walking one, and striking out seven. He repeatedly escaped trouble by missing barrels and making big pitches when runners reached scoring position.
The outing could not have come at a better time for an Orioles club that has undergone significant roster turnover following the trade deadline and needed stability from its pitching staff.
Alonso Provides the Big Swing
Baltimore managed only four hits all night, but one came in the decisive third inning.
After the Orioles loaded the bases, Pete Alonso lined a two-run single to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead. Against former Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez, those two runs were enough to put the Orioles in front for good.
Rodriguez pitched well for Los Angeles, throwing seven innings while allowing only three hits, but he was charged with the loss after the Orioles capitalized on their limited scoring opportunities.
O’Neill Adds Insurance
The Orioles added an important insurance run in the eighth inning when Tyler O’Neill came off the bench and launched a pinch-hit solo home run to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Angels finally broke through in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Nolan Schanuel and Vaughn Grissom, trimming the deficit to 3-1, but Baltimore’s bullpen prevented any further damage.
Yennier Cano closed out the ninth to earn the save and secure the victory.
Former Orioles Prospect Returns to Camden Yards
One of the night’s biggest storylines was the return of Grayson Rodriguez to Baltimore.
Now pitching for the Angels after injuries and organizational changes altered his path, Rodriguez delivered a quality start despite taking the loss. His seven-inning effort kept Los Angeles within striking distance throughout the evening, but Baltimore made the most of its few offensive chances.
What It Means
The Orioles are still searching for offensive consistency following several major roster changes, but Tuesday’s win showed the formula they will need moving forward:
- Strong starting pitching.
- Timely hitting with runners on base.
- Shutdown relief pitching.
Povich’s performance also gives Baltimore another encouraging option in the rotation as the club evaluates young talent during the final two months of the season.

Cade Povich looked poised from the first pitch and gave Baltimore six outstanding innings when the club desperately needed length from its rotation. Pete Alonso continues to provide the middle-of-the-order presence the Orioles were hoping for, delivering the game’s biggest hit despite the offense managing only four hits. If Baltimore is going to stay competitive after the trade deadline shakeup, performances like Tuesday night’s—from quality starting pitching to timely hitting and reliable bullpen work—will have to become the norm rather than the exception.
