Norfolk Injury Update

353px-Kevin_Gausman_(cropped)Kevin Gausman, the Norfolk Tides’ ace and Orioles pitching prospect, has been starched tonight’s start due to illness. Gausman was diagnosed with an intercostal muscle strain after experiencing chest pains Thursday.
Gausman was slated to be called up to the Orioles on Friday to help in the bullpen after Thursday’s double header against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Friday was supposed to be Gausman’s day to pitch in the rotation. According to the Norfolk Tides Twitter account, Gausman will be placed on the disabled list, retro 4/30, to make room for infielder Steve Lombardozzi on the roster.

In other injury news, outfielder Henry Urrutia was placed on the seven-day disabled list on Thursday. Urrutia is hitting .220 with six doubles and seven RBI in 20 games this season.

Starting pitcher Steve Johnson will be reactivated from the disabled list and start tomorrow’s game. So far this season, Johnson (0-0 5.87) has pitched in two games for Norfolk.

Eddie Gamboa will start in place of Gausman for the Tides tonight. Gamboa looks to bounce back from his start on Sunday, one of his worst starts of the season.

In his last start, Gamboa pitched 5.2 innings and had season highs for everything but hits and strikeouts. Gamboa allowed six runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks, gave up three homeruns, more than he allowed in his previous five starts combined, and struck out six.

Gamboa (0-2 5.40 ERA) and the Tides face Brian Gordon (1-1 3.51 ERA) and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at 7:05 in Norfolk. The Tides lineup is posted below.
