NFL Power Rankings Week 1: Ravens Make a Statement as NFL Season Gets Underway

The first week of the 2026 NFL season is officially in the books, and it did not take long for the league to remind everyone how quickly preseason expectations can change once meaningful football begins.

Baltimore exploded offensively. Buffalo survived a difficult road test. San Francisco dominated the Los Angeles Rams. Kansas City opened with a convincing victory. Jacksonville dismantled Cleveland, while Chicago put an incredible 59 points on the scoreboard.

There were surprises elsewhere. Arizona went on the road and defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota knocked off Green Bay, and the New York Giants opened their new era with a victory over Dallas.

One game is nowhere near enough evidence to determine which teams will ultimately contend for Super Bowl LXI. It is enough, however, to begin identifying each team’s early strengths, weaknesses and areas that could determine whether Week 1 was the beginning of something significant or simply an opening-week anomaly.

Welcome to the first NFLsportsblog.com NFL Power Rankings.

1. Baltimore Ravens — 1-0

Week 1: Won 41-23

There might not have been a more complete performance in the NFL than what Baltimore produced in its opener. Lamar Jackson passed for 324 yards, Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns, and Zay Flowers exploded for 150 receiving yards. Baltimore finished with 506 yards of offense while limiting its opponent to 251.

That combination is frightening for the rest of the AFC. Jackson remains one of football’s most difficult quarterbacks to defend, while Henry showed that Baltimore can still punish defenses on the ground.

Strengths: Baltimore’s greatest strength remains the versatility created by Jackson and Henry. Defenses have to account for Jackson’s arm and legs while simultaneously preparing for one of football’s most physical running backs. Flowers adds explosive ability outside, and Baltimore’s Week 1 defensive performance showed the Ravens can control both sides of the football.

Weaknesses: The biggest question will be whether Baltimore can maintain this level of offensive efficiency against stronger defensive fronts. Protecting Jackson and keeping Henry fresh throughout a long season will also be important. The Ravens cannot allow a dominant opening performance to hide areas that stronger opponents could eventually exploit.

2. Buffalo Bills — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Houston, 36-31

Buffalo did not have an easy afternoon in Houston, but great teams find ways to win difficult games. Josh Allen threw for 334 yards and helped account for four touchdowns as Buffalo accumulated 409 total yards.

Houston kept answering, but Allen eventually delivered. Buffalo once again demonstrated that it can survive games that become quarterback-driven shootouts.

Strengths: Allen remains Buffalo’s greatest advantage. His combination of arm strength, mobility and ability to create after plays break down gives the Bills a chance against virtually anyone. Buffalo also showed considerable offensive resilience when Houston continued applying pressure.

Weaknesses: Allowing 31 points immediately raises questions about the defense. Buffalo cannot continually expect Allen and the offense to score in the mid-30s to win. Limiting explosive plays and producing more defensive stops will be critical against the AFC’s other elite teams.

3. San Francisco 49ers — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Los Angeles Rams, 27-7

San Francisco delivered one of Week 1’s strongest defensive performances. The 49ers held the Rams to seven points while winning 27-7 and controlling the game from beginning to end.

Brock Purdy efficiently operated the offense, while Christian McCaffrey remained dangerous without needing an enormous workload.

Strengths: San Francisco remains one of the league’s most balanced teams. The 49ers can run, create yards after the catch, pressure quarterbacks and play physical defense. McCaffrey’s versatility makes the entire offense more difficult to defend.

Weaknesses: Health remains one of San Francisco’s most important concerns. The 49ers have tremendous top-end talent, but their championship aspirations depend on keeping their most important players available. Purdy will also eventually face games in which he has to carry more of the offensive burden.

4. Kansas City Chiefs — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Denver, 31-10

Kansas City opened the season with a convincing 31-10 victory over Denver. The Chiefs controlled the game and again demonstrated why they remain one of the AFC’s standards.

Patrick Mahomes does not need spectacular statistics every week for Kansas City to dominate. His command of the offense changes how opponents have to defend every possession.

Strengths: Mahomes is the obvious centerpiece. Kansas City also has championship experience, coaching continuity and an ability to adjust during games. The Chiefs rarely appear overwhelmed by a situation.

Weaknesses: Kansas City still needs consistent production around Mahomes. A great quarterback can cover weaknesses, but asking Mahomes to rescue the offense every week is not ideal. The Chiefs’ supporting skill players and offensive line will be important areas to monitor.

5. Seattle Seahawks — 1-0

Week 1: Beat New England, 13-10

Seattle started the season by winning an ugly defensive game. The Seahawks forced three turnovers and limited New England to 10 points.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba provided 122 receiving yards and remained the primary offensive difference-maker.

Strengths: Seattle can win with defense. That gives the Seahawks considerable margin for error when the offense struggles. Smith-Njigba also provides an established weapon capable of changing games.

Weaknesses: Scoring 13 points will not consistently beat the NFL’s best teams. Seattle needs more offensive consistency and cannot become overly dependent on its defense generating turnovers.

6. Cincinnati Bengals — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Tampa Bay, 33-27

Joe Burrow and Cincinnati’s offense looked dangerous immediately. The Bengals scored 33 points while also benefiting from four Tampa Bay turnovers.

Cincinnati possesses enough offensive talent to create mismatches against almost any opponent.

Strengths: Burrow gives Cincinnati elite quarterback play, while the Bengals have explosive receiving options capable of attacking every part of the field. Cincinnati can erase deficits quickly.

Weaknesses: Defensive consistency remains the concern. Allowing 27 points despite forcing four turnovers suggests there are areas that require attention. Cincinnati cannot rely exclusively on Burrow winning shootouts.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Cleveland, 34-10

Trevor Lawrence delivered one of Week 1’s most impressive quarterback performances, throwing four touchdowns in Jacksonville’s 34-10 victory.

The Jaguars committed no turnovers and controlled Cleveland on both sides of the ball.

Strengths: Lawrence’s talent gives Jacksonville a high ceiling, and Week 1 demonstrated what happens when he protects the football and finishes drives. Jacksonville also showed encouraging defensive pressure and overall balance.

Weaknesses: Consistency remains the question. Jacksonville needs Lawrence and the offense to reproduce performances like this against stronger opponents. One dominant victory does not completely eliminate previous concerns about offensive stretches of inconsistency.

8. Minnesota Vikings — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Green Bay, 39-22

Minnesota defeated Green Bay despite being significantly outgained. The Vikings made the critical plays, forced turnovers and capitalized on opportunities.

Justin Jefferson remains one of the league’s premier offensive weapons.

Strengths: Jefferson can change the geometry of a defense by himself. Minnesota also demonstrated excellent situational football and the ability to turn mistakes into points.

Weaknesses: The yardage disparity is difficult to ignore. Minnesota cannot consistently allow opponents to move the football at that rate and expect turnovers or situational plays to compensate.

9. Philadelphia Eagles — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Washington, 24-22

Philadelphia survived a difficult NFC East battle. Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley gave the Eagles enough offensive production to escape with the victory.

Divisional games are rarely easy, and Philadelphia found a way.

Strengths: Philadelphia remains extremely difficult to defend because of Hurts’ mobility and Barkley’s rushing ability. The Eagles can attack defenses physically while creating explosive opportunities through the air.

Weaknesses: Philadelphia did not separate itself from Washington. The Eagles will need greater offensive consistency and more decisive defensive performances if they want to remain near the top of the NFC.

10. Detroit Lions — 1-0

Week 1: Beat New Orleans, 31-30 in overtime

Detroit survived an enormous challenge from New Orleans. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Lions escape in overtime.

The victory was impressive. Allowing 469 yards was not.

Strengths: Gibbs gives Detroit a dynamic rushing weapon capable of taking over games. The Lions also showed resilience by surviving a shootout when their defense struggled.

Weaknesses: Pass defense is immediately the major concern. Allowing 410 passing yards creates a massive warning sign. Better quarterbacks will attack that weakness until Detroit proves it can stop them.

11. Chicago Bears — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Carolina, 59-37

Chicago produced the week’s most explosive offensive performance with 59 points and 552 total yards.

D’Andre Swift rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns as Chicago overwhelmed Carolina.

Strengths: Explosiveness. Chicago demonstrated the ability to score from virtually anywhere and produce huge plays. The Bears’ rushing attack can also keep defenses from focusing exclusively on the passing game.

Weaknesses: Allowing 37 points and 478 yards is alarming. Chicago cannot expect to score 50 every week. The defense has to improve substantially for the Bears to become a complete contender.

12. Arizona Cardinals — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Los Angeles Chargers, 26-14

Arizona went on the road and produced one of the week’s more impressive victories.

The Cardinals accumulated 393 yards, committed no turnovers and held the Chargers to 268 yards.

Strengths: Arizona played clean, efficient football. Avoiding turnovers while controlling possession gives the Cardinals a sustainable formula. The defense also deserves credit for limiting an opponent with considerable offensive talent.

Weaknesses: Arizona still needs to demonstrate that its Week 1 efficiency can be repeated. The Cardinals may not possess the overwhelming star power of the NFC’s elite teams, making execution especially important.

13. New York Giants — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Dallas, 28-20

The Giants opened the John Harbaugh era with a victory over Dallas. Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards while New York produced 394 total yards.

The defense limited Dallas to only 244.

Strengths: New York looked disciplined and balanced. Dart provides upside at quarterback, while the defense demonstrated that it can control an opponent.

Weaknesses: Dart remains a developing quarterback, and young quarterbacks inevitably experience difficult stretches. New York needs to protect him and avoid placing the entire offense on his shoulders.

14. Las Vegas Raiders — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Miami, 27-13

Las Vegas quietly produced a convincing victory. Ashton Jeanty rushed for 102 yards as the Raiders controlled Miami.

Strengths: The running game gives Las Vegas an identity. A productive rushing attack can shorten games and reduce pressure on the quarterback.

Weaknesses: The passing offense still has to prove it can consistently punish defenses that load the box against Jeanty. Better opponents will force Las Vegas to win through the air.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Atlanta, 20-13

Pittsburgh began the season with another defense-driven victory. Aaron Rodgers provided veteran quarterback play, while T.J. Watt and the defense made major contributions.

Strengths: Pittsburgh’s defense remains its foundation. Watt can alter games by himself, while Rodgers gives the offense considerable experience.

Weaknesses: Offensive explosiveness remains a question. Pittsburgh cannot depend on defensive touchdowns and turnovers every week. Rodgers and the offense eventually need to demonstrate they can consistently create points.

16. New York Jets — 1-0

Week 1: Beat Tennessee, 23-10

New York accumulated 367 yards and held Tennessee below 200. Breece Hall rushed for 102 yards and provided the offense with balance.

Strengths: The Jets can run the football and play defense. That is one of the oldest winning formulas in football.

Weaknesses: The passing game remains the biggest uncertainty. Opponents will eventually sell out against Hall until New York demonstrates it can consistently beat them downfield.

17. Houston Texans — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Buffalo, 36-31

Houston went toe-to-toe with Buffalo and nearly pulled off an impressive opening victory.

The Texans generated 381 yards and 31 points but could not finish.

Strengths: Houston possesses enough offensive firepower to compete with elite opponents. The Texans showed they can survive a fast-paced game against Allen and Buffalo.

Weaknesses: Finishing games and protecting the football. Two turnovers proved costly against an opponent that provides very little margin for error.

18. Washington Commanders — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Philadelphia, 24-22

Washington was only two points away from a divisional road victory.

The Commanders competed throughout the afternoon and showed little reason to believe they cannot challenge Philadelphia and the rest of the NFC East.

Strengths: Washington’s competitiveness and overall balance stood out. The Commanders did not turn the football over and remained within one possession throughout the game.

Weaknesses: Finishing close games is the next step. Washington has to turn competitive performances against strong opponents into victories.

19. New Orleans Saints — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Detroit, 31-30 in overtime

Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and Chris Olave accumulated 182 receiving yards. New Orleans produced 469 yards but still lost.

Strengths: The Shough-Olave connection could become one of the season’s most interesting developments. New Orleans demonstrated legitimate big-play passing ability.

Weaknesses: The Saints have to finish games. Producing nearly 470 yards and still losing means opportunities were left on the field.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Cincinnati, 33-27

Tampa Bay remained competitive despite turning the football over four times.

Strengths: The Buccaneers showed resilience. Staying within one possession despite repeatedly giving Cincinnati extra opportunities demonstrates that Tampa Bay has enough talent to compete.

Weaknesses: Ball security is the obvious problem. Four turnovers will destroy otherwise strong performances.

21. Green Bay Packers — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Minnesota, 39-22

Jordan Love threw for 387 yards and Green Bay generated 419 total yards but somehow lost by 17.

Strengths: The passing offense clearly possesses enormous potential. Green Bay can move the football quickly and create explosive plays.

Weaknesses: Efficiency and turnovers. Huge yardage totals are meaningless if drives do not become points. The defense also has to prevent opponents from capitalizing so effectively on mistakes.

22. Dallas Cowboys — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to New York Giants, 28-20

Dallas generated only 244 yards while surrendering 394.

Strengths: Dallas still possesses established talent capable of producing significantly better performances than Week 1 showed.

Weaknesses: Offensive consistency and defensive containment were both problems. Getting outgained by 150 yards against a division opponent is a major concern.

23. Los Angeles Chargers — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Arizona, 26-14

The Chargers managed only 268 yards while Arizona generated 393.

Strengths: Los Angeles still has enough individual talent to rebound quickly, particularly at quarterback.

Weaknesses: Offensive efficiency, turnovers and defensive consistency all require improvement. The Chargers were beaten at home by a team that simply played cleaner football.

24. Denver Broncos — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Kansas City, 31-10

Denver generated only 176 yards and committed two turnovers in a difficult Monday night opener.

Strengths: Denver has enough defensive talent to keep games competitive when the offense performs adequately.

Weaknesses: Offensive production is the immediate concern. No NFL team wants to finish below 200 total yards, particularly against a divisional rival.

25. Los Angeles Rams — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to San Francisco, 27-7

Los Angeles struggled to generate points and committed two turnovers against San Francisco.

Strengths: The Rams still possess experienced players and coaches capable of adjusting quickly.

Weaknesses: Offensive execution and turnovers were major problems. Seven points will rarely be enough in today’s NFL.

26. New England Patriots — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Seattle, 13-10

New England’s defense gave the Patriots an opportunity to win. Three turnovers prevented them from taking advantage.

Strengths: The defense looks capable of keeping New England in low-scoring games.

Weaknesses: Offensive production and ball security. The Patriots cannot waste strong defensive performances by repeatedly giving away possessions.

27. Atlanta Falcons — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Pittsburgh, 20-13

Atlanta struggled to turn possessions into touchdowns against Pittsburgh.

Strengths: Bijan Robinson remains a versatile centerpiece capable of producing as both a runner and receiver.

Weaknesses: Quarterback production and offensive finishing have to improve. Opponents will focus heavily on Robinson until Atlanta demonstrates another consistent way to beat them.

28. Carolina Panthers — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Chicago, 59-37

Carolina scored 37 points and accumulated 478 yards. Normally, that should be enough to win.

It was not remotely enough against Chicago.

Strengths: Bryce Young and the passing offense showed legitimate explosiveness. Producing 478 yards provides something encouraging to build around.

Weaknesses: Everything defensively. Allowing 59 points and 552 yards is unsustainable regardless of how well the offense performs.

29. Miami Dolphins — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Las Vegas, 27-13

Miami produced only 259 yards and struggled to generate the explosive offense normally associated with the Dolphins.

Strengths: Miami still possesses speed and players capable of generating explosive plays when properly utilized.

Weaknesses: The offense needs greater consistency, particularly when opponents prevent easy explosive plays. Miami cannot become one-dimensional.

30. Tennessee Titans — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to New York Jets, 23-10

Tennessee managed only 195 total yards in its opener.

Strengths: Cam Ward provides long-term upside and gives Tennessee a young quarterback around whom it can continue building.

Weaknesses: Almost everything offensively needs improvement. Pass protection, explosive plays, third-down execution and overall yardage production have to improve to help Ward develop.

31. Cleveland Browns — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Jacksonville, 34-10

Cleveland was overwhelmed at home and committed two turnovers while scoring only 10 points.

Strengths: Cleveland still has defensive talent capable of producing better performances than this.

Weaknesses: The offense remains a substantial concern. Quarterback production, turnovers and the inability to sustain scoring drives put enormous pressure on the defense.

32. Indianapolis professional football team — 0-1

Week 1: Lost to Baltimore, 41-23

Baltimore outgained Indianapolis 506-251, producing one of the largest statistical mismatches of opening weekend.

Indianapolis also committed two turnovers and surrendered 41 points.

Strengths: There were at least some offensive scoring plays to build upon, with 23 points providing more optimism than the total-yardage difference would suggest.

Weaknesses: Run defense, overall defensive execution, offensive consistency and turnovers all need substantial improvement. Allowing more than 500 yards while producing roughly half that amount offensively is not a sustainable formula.

Week 1 Top Five

1. Baltimore Ravens — Strength: Offensive versatility | Weakness: Maintaining this level against stronger defenses

2. Buffalo Bills — Strength: Josh Allen and explosive offense | Weakness: Defensive consistency

3. San Francisco 49ers — Strength: Overall roster balance | Weakness: Health and depth

4. Kansas City Chiefs — Strength: Patrick Mahomes and championship experience | Weakness: Consistent supporting offensive production

5. Seattle Seahawks — Strength: Defense | Weakness: Offensive scoring consistency

Final Take

Baltimore earns the first No. 1 ranking because its combination of quarterback play, rushing production, explosive passing plays and defensive performance produced one of the league’s most complete opening efforts. Buffalo, San Francisco and Kansas City remain immediately behind the Ravens, while Seattle rounds out the first top five.

Jacksonville could become one of the biggest risers if Trevor Lawrence continues playing at his Week 1 level. Chicago is another team to watch after scoring 59 points, although the Bears’ defensive performance makes them difficult to place among the league’s elite just yet.

The most important thing to remember is that these are power rankings, not standings. A 0-1 team can rank ahead of a 1-0 team when its overall roster, performance and quality of competition suggest it remains stronger. Likewise, one spectacular Week 1 victory does not erase every question surrounding a team.
