Navy Women’s Soccer Set for Service Academy Showdown Against Air Force

The Navy women’s soccer team will close out its season-opening homestand with one of the more intriguing early-season matchups on its schedule, as the Midshipmen welcome service academy rival Air Force to Annapolis.

Navy and Air Force are scheduled to meet Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The matchup brings together a Navy squad looking to build momentum early in the 2026 season and an Air Force team that has opened the year with an impressive 2-0 record.

The Midshipmen enter the contest at 1-1 through their first two games under longtime head coach Carin Gabarra. Navy opened the season with a victory over Robert Morris before facing Rice in its second contest.

Thursday’s meeting will also continue a rivalry that has not been played regularly despite the natural connection between the two service academies.

Navy holds a narrow 4-3 advantage in the all-time series against Air Force. The programs first met in 1997 and played six times between 1997 and 2002, primarily as part of the Military Academies Classic in St. Louis.

After nearly two decades without a meeting, the series resumed in Annapolis on Sept. 12, 2021.

Air Force won that match 1-0 despite Navy generating much of the offensive pressure. The Midshipmen produced four shots within the opening 20 minutes, but the Falcons converted one of their limited opportunities when Jenna Rubidoux scored in the 23rd minute.

Navy will look for a different result this time around.

Air Force Comes to Annapolis Undefeated

Air Force has been one of the stronger teams during the opening week of the season.

The Falcons began their campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over fellow service academy Army before defeating Creighton 3-1. Those victories sent Air Force to Annapolis with a 2-0 record and seven goals scored over its first two matches.

That offensive production will provide an early test for Navy’s defensive organization.

Air Force entered the season with significant expectations after being selected as the preseason favorite in the Mountain West. The Falcons also had multiple players receive preseason recognition.

Midfielder Annika Jost was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Midfielders to Watch List, while defender Jordan Dillingham earned a spot on the organization’s defenders watch list.

That combination of experience and early offensive success makes Air Force one of Navy’s more difficult nonconference opponents.

Navy Building Around Experienced Leadership

Navy entered the 2026 season following a 9-6-4 campaign in 2025.

The Midshipmen are led by senior captain ClaraJane Williams, who was selected to captain the program for the 2026 season.

Navy also returns a group of experienced players while integrating another talented freshman class into the rotation.

Among the players capable of creating opportunities for Navy are senior Chiara Cosenza and senior Hannah Mulholland, while younger players are beginning to establish roles during the opening stretch of the schedule.

The early nonconference portion of the season is particularly important for Navy because the Midshipmen will eventually transition into Patriot League play, where defensive organization and consistency can determine postseason positioning.

A matchup against an undefeated Air Force squad should provide Navy with an opportunity to measure itself against a quality opponent before conference competition begins.

Rare Service Academy Matchup

Although Navy and Air Force compete against one another frequently across collegiate athletics, meetings between the women’s soccer programs have been relatively uncommon.

Navy has outscored Air Force 8-6 across the first seven meetings between the programs.

The Midshipmen’s best stretch in the series came when Navy defeated Air Force in three consecutive seasons from 2000 through 2002.

The 2026 matchup will be only the eighth meeting between the programs and just the second since 2002.

That history adds another layer to Thursday night’s game.

Service academy matchups often carry additional significance regardless of sport, and Navy will have the advantage of playing the contest in front of its home crowd at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Busy Early Schedule Continues

The Air Force matchup is part of an aggressive opening schedule for Navy.

The Midshipmen were scheduled to play six of their first seven games at home, giving the program an opportunity to establish itself before spending much of September on the road.

Following Thursday’s matchup, Navy will make its first road trip of the season when the Midshipmen travel to Newark to face Delaware on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m.

Navy holds a 2-1 all-time advantage against Delaware, although the Blue Hens won the most recent meeting 1-0 in Annapolis during the 2025 season.

After Delaware, Navy returns home for games against Marywood, Maryland and Marist.

The matchup against Maryland on Aug. 27 is another major early-season game for the Midshipmen and continues an in-state series that has become a regular part of Navy’s nonconference schedule.

A Valuable Early Test for Navy

Thursday night should provide Navy with one of its best measuring sticks of the opening weeks of the season.

Air Force has already demonstrated that it can score goals, and the Falcons arrive in Annapolis carrying momentum from victories over Army and Creighton.

For Navy, the keys will be controlling possession through the midfield, limiting Air Force’s opportunities in transition and finishing chances when they appear.

The Midshipmen have historically played Air Force closely, with five of the first seven meetings between the programs decided by one goal.

Another competitive game would not be surprising.

More importantly, the matchup gives Navy an opportunity to build chemistry and confidence before the schedule becomes increasingly difficult.

Kickoff between Navy and Air Force is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

For Navy, it is more than another early-season nonconference match.

It is a rare service academy rivalry game and an opportunity for the Midshipmen to make an early statement against an undefeated opponent.
