Navy and Army Battle to Scoreless Draw in 2026 Women’s Soccer Star Match
By Maryland Sports Blog Staff | October 10, 2026
The Navy Midshipmen women’s soccer team battled rival Army West Point to a 0-0 draw Friday afternoon in the 2026 Star Match at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Both programs entered the contest among the Patriot League’s top teams, making the rivalry matchup important for conference positioning and service academy bragging rights. Despite several scoring opportunities and an intense defensive battle, neither team could find the back of the net over 90 minutes.

Navy moved to 10-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Patriot League competition, while Army improved to 7-6-1 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play. The Midshipmen received another strong performance from junior goalkeeper Natasha Stramrood, who recorded two saves to preserve the shutout. Army goalkeeper Karalyn Dail matched that performance with two saves of her own. The result extended Army’s unbeaten streak against Navy to six meetings, while the Midshipmen remained within striking distance in the conference standings.
Navy Creates Early Scoring Opportunities
Navy generated its best offensive opportunities during the opening half, testing Army’s defense with aggressive movement and passing combinations. In the 16th minute, Jessica Black helped initiate an attack down the left side before connecting with Chiara Cosenza, who moved the ball toward freshman Sophia Ryan. Ryan fired a dangerous shot toward the upper corner, but Dail made an impressive save to keep the contest scoreless.
Cosenza created another opportunity in the 27th minute, putting a shot on target that Dail successfully handled. Navy continued pressing throughout the opening 45 minutes but struggled to generate clean looks against Army’s disciplined defensive formation. The Midshipmen finished the first half with four shots, including two on goal, compared with Army’s two total attempts. Both teams entered halftime tied at zero despite Navy’s early offensive advantage.
Army Controls Much of the Second Half
Army emerged from halftime with increased offensive pressure and began creating opportunities inside Navy’s defensive third. Bella Conti tested Stramrood in the 52nd minute before Sophia Henry delivered another shot on goal three minutes later. Stramrood handled both attempts, preventing the Black Knights from taking the lead. Her performance helped Navy withstand Army’s strongest offensive stretch of the afternoon.
The Black Knights controlled much of the second-half attacking play, recording six shots compared with Navy’s two. Army also generated seven corner kicks throughout the match, while Navy failed to earn a corner opportunity. Despite that territorial advantage, Army could not convert its chances into a goal. Navy’s defensive organization held firm through the final whistle, securing a valuable conference point.
Physical Rivalry Produces Defensive Battle
The intensity associated with the Army-Navy rivalry was evident throughout the afternoon, with both teams contesting possession and challenging for every loose ball. Officials called 28 combined fouls, including 15 against Army and 13 against Navy. Sustained offensive possessions proved difficult as both defenses applied pressure and disrupted passing sequences.

The draw marked the second consecutive year that the women’s soccer programs finished their Star Match without a winner, following a 2-2 tie in 2025. Army retained possession of the Army-Navy Cup, and neither program received a Star Series point for Friday’s scoreless result. Navy still holds an 18-16-6 advantage in the all-time series, although Army has enjoyed greater success in recent meetings.
Navy Looks Ahead to Bucknell
Navy will return to Annapolis for another important Patriot League matchup against Bucknell on Friday, October 16. With the conference schedule entering its second half, the Midshipmen remain in position to compete for one of the league’s top postseason seeds. Maintaining their defensive consistency while generating more offensive opportunities will be essential as Navy prepares for the final stretch of the regular season.
MSB Take
Navy might not have secured the rivalry victory it wanted, but earning a point against an undefeated Patriot League opponent remains a respectable result. Stramrood continues to provide stability in goal, and the Midshipmen demonstrated they can withstand sustained pressure against quality conference competition. However, Navy’s inability to generate a single corner kick and its limited second-half offense highlight areas that need improvement.
The Midshipmen have the talent to challenge for a Patriot League championship, but they must create more consistent attacking opportunities against disciplined defensive teams. Friday’s performance showed that Navy can compete with Army, although the Black Knights controlled too much of the second half. With Bucknell coming to Annapolis next week, Navy has an opportunity to build on its defensive performance while rediscovering the offensive production that helped the team reach 10 victories this season.
