Mike Rizzo Staying with Nats

The Washington Nationals extended the contract of general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo.

Nationals and Mike Rizzo agree on contract extension.

As Rizzo said to the Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan, the multi-year deal will make it 20 years with the Nats when this new deal expires. Rizzo started with the Nats in 2006.

Jessica Camerato has a nice summary here on mlb.com.

So does Mark Zuckerman of MASN sports.

Most in the media thought it was only a matter of time after Davey Martinez was also extended last month.

In true Lerner family fashion, I thought the process dragged on too long. But I am very happy as a Nats fan.  It is funny how the Lerner family repeatedly keeps things close to the vest and they don’t like to negotiate publicly. It is no secret that these family traits are a big reason why they became very successful MLB owners.  But the dragging out style can often backfire.  It draws attention; often negative.

But Mike Rizzo is a special case.  We know he loves the District and the quality and pace of life here.  Like his Nats, “Rizz” is gritty and scrappy.  Like the city he represents, he is extremely hard working.  For at least a couple more years, this perfect fit will continue.
