MSB: Coppin State Promotes Tatyana McClaney to Full-Time Assistant Coach

The Coppin State women’s basketball program continues to build its coaching staff for the future as head coach Darrell Mosley has promoted Tatyana McClaney from volunteer assistant to full-time assistant coach. The move rewards a coach who quickly earned the trust of the Eagles’ staff during her first season in Baltimore and brings valuable recruiting, player development, and regional basketball connections to the program.

McClaney joined Coppin State prior to the 2025-26 season after four successful years as an assistant coach at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland. While with the Shock, she helped the program reach new heights, including a school-record 20-7 season in 2023-24. Her responsibilities included player development, game planning, recruiting, scouting, and running practices, making her an ideal candidate to take on an expanded role with the Eagles.

Head coach Darrell Mosley has emphasized building a culture centered on accountability, development, and recruiting throughout the DMV region. Promoting McClaney provides continuity within the program while keeping a coach who already understands the players, the system, and the expectations inside Coppin’s locker room.

Strong Maryland Basketball Roots

McClaney also brings extensive grassroots recruiting experience to Coppin State. She previously worked with Team Thrill, formerly known as DC Premier Girls, one of the premier AAU organizations in the Mid-Atlantic. Her responsibilities included coordinating team operations, fundraising, organizing events, and helping educate student-athletes on NCAA recruiting and eligibility requirements.

Those relationships throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia could prove valuable as Coppin State continues to compete for some of the region’s top high school talent.

Outstanding Playing Career

Before entering coaching, McClaney enjoyed an impressive collegiate career at Francis Marion University, where she became one of the school’s best defensive players.

Among her accomplishments:

• Finished among Francis Marion’s all-time leaders with 131 career blocked shots
• Four-year standout for the Patriots
• Earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources
• Played professionally in Mexico
• Competed semi-professionally with the Maryland Jewels after returning to the United States

Her experience as both a collegiate standout and professional player gives her firsthand knowledge she can pass along to Coppin’s frontcourt players.

Volunteer assistants often handle many behind-the-scenes responsibilities but have limited recruiting opportunities due to NCAA rules. Moving McClaney into a full-time assistant position allows her to play a much larger role in:
