Mount St. Mary’s Cross Country Announces 2026 Meet Schedule: Mountaineers Ready for Challenging Fall Campaign
The Mount St. Mary’s men’s and women’s cross country teams now know the path they will take during the 2026 season. The Mountaineers will compete in a six-meet schedule that features four regular-season competitions before turning their attention to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
The schedule provides a balanced mix of home competition, regional meets, and championship opportunities as Mount looks to continue building one of the stronger distance programs in the MAAC. After a successful 2025 campaign and an outstanding year for the university’s track and field programs—which included the Mount men’s team winning the 2026 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship—the cross country teams will be looking to carry that momentum into the fall season.
Season Opens at Home
The 2026 season begins on Friday, September 4, when Mount St. Mary’s hosts the annual Mount 5K Duels on East Campus in Emmitsburg. The women’s race will begin at 4:00 p.m., followed by the men’s race at 4:30 p.m.
Hosting the opening meet gives the Mountaineers a chance to compete in familiar surroundings while introducing freshmen to collegiate racing before heading onto the road for the remainder of the regular season.
Competitive Regular Season
Following the season opener, the Mountaineers will travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to prepare for championship competition.
While the schedule consists of just four regular-season meets, each race becomes increasingly important as athletes work to improve fitness, earn personal bests, and position themselves for postseason success.
Cross country coaches often prefer a lighter schedule compared to track and field because it allows runners to maximize training between races while peaking in late October and November when conference and NCAA championships are contested.
MAAC Championship Focus
The regular season culminates with the MAAC Cross Country Championships, where both the men’s and women’s teams will attempt to climb the conference standings.
The MAAC has become increasingly competitive over the last several seasons, with programs such as Iona, Rider, Quinnipiac, Siena, and Mount St. Mary’s continuing to elevate the conference’s overall level.
A strong performance at the conference championship can also earn individual runners All-MAAC honors while helping the team qualify for regional recognition.
NCAA Regional Awaits
The season concludes at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, where the Mountaineers will compete against many of the nation’s top programs from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and surrounding states.
The regional meet provides athletes an opportunity to cap their seasons against elite NCAA competition while measuring the program’s progress against nationally recognized teams.
Building on Program Success
Cross country has become an increasingly important component of Mount St. Mary’s athletics. Success during the fall directly translates to the indoor and outdoor track seasons, where distance runners frequently score valuable points in conference championships.
