Morgan State Rallies Past North Carolina A&T, 17-7, to Open 2026 Season

Morgan State opened the 2026 football season with a statement Saturday night, rallying from a halftime deficit and shutting out North Carolina A&T over the final three quarters to defeat the Aggies, 17-7, at Truist Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Bears entered the fourth quarter trailing 7-3 before finally breaking through offensively. Morgan State scored 14 unanswered points in the final period to turn what had been a defensive battle into a season-opening road victory.
The win moved Morgan State to 1-0 and continued the Bears’ recent success against their longtime rival. Morgan State had also beaten North Carolina A&T in the previous two meetings, winning 16-13 in Greensboro in 2018 and 22-16 in Baltimore in 2019. Morgan State entered Saturday leading the historic series, 44-38-3.
Aggies Strike First
North Carolina A&T controlled much of the opening half and scored the game’s first touchdown in the opening quarter.
Quarterback Braxton Thomas used his legs to put the Aggies ahead, accounting for North Carolina A&T’s lone touchdown of the night. The Aggies carried a 7-0 advantage out of the first quarter.
Morgan State’s defense made sure the deficit did not grow.
That became one of the most important developments of the game. North Carolina A&T accumulated 328 yards of total offense and held the football for 35:41, compared with only 24:19 of possession for Morgan State. Despite that advantage, the Aggies managed just seven points.
Morgan State got on the scoreboard with a field goal during the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 7-3 before halftime.
Neither team scored during the third quarter, leaving the Bears four points behind entering the final 15 minutes.
Bears Explode in Fourth Quarter
Morgan State’s offense finally found the breakthrough it needed in the fourth.
Senior quarterback Cameron Edge, who earned the starting job during preseason camp, delivered in his first start of the season. Edge completed 13 of 19 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, overcoming one interception while helping engineer the fourth-quarter comeback.
His biggest connection went to Joseph Towler, who turned his lone reception into a massive 68-yard touchdown. Towler’s explosive play changed the complexion of a game in which sustained offense had been difficult to find.
Edge was named Morgan State’s starter just one week before the opener after winning a preseason competition. Head coach Damon Wilson also selected Edge as one of Morgan State’s four team captains alongside Arturo Mattocks, Aki Harvey and Randall Nauden.
The Bears were not finished.
Running back Jordan Barnett provided another explosive dimension and delivered a tremendous season debut. Barnett rushed 12 times for 114 yards and a touchdown, averaging an eye-popping 9.5 yards per carry.
His longest run went for 42 yards.
Between Edge’s passing and Barnett’s rushing, Morgan State suddenly had the explosive plays that had been missing through the first three quarters. The Bears put 14 points on the board in the fourth while their defense continued to keep the Aggies out of the end zone.
When the clock reached zero, Morgan State had completed a 17-7 comeback victory.
Edge Delivers in Morgan State Debut as Starter
The final statistics do not tell the entire story of Edge’s performance.
Morgan State generated 276 total yards, 52 fewer than North Carolina A&T, and possessed the football for more than 11 fewer minutes. The Bears needed efficiency and explosive plays rather than sheer volume.
Edge provided both when it mattered.
His 13 completions produced 167 yards, an average of nearly nine yards per passing attempt. Towler’s 68-yard touchdown was the biggest passing play, while sophomore Justin Perry emerged as Edge’s most frequent target with four receptions for 45 yards.
Tight end Alex Simmons added two catches for 20 yards.
Morgan State announced Edge as its starting quarterback on Aug. 22 after a competition that included Tahj Smith, Raeden Oliver and Ade Olanegan. Wilson praised Edge’s leadership and said the senior had earned the trust and respect of his teammates during the offseason.
One game into the season, the decision has already produced a road victory.
Barnett Gives Bears a Big-Play Running Threat
Barnett’s performance may be just as encouraging for Morgan State.
The redshirt senior transferred to Morgan State after playing at Shepherd and was listed at 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds during the Bears’ spring practices.
Against North Carolina A&T, Barnett demonstrated that he can provide more than power between the tackles.
His 114 yards came on only 12 carries. His 42-yard long run and 9.5-yard average gave Morgan State an explosive rushing threat and helped offset a difficult night for the rest of the Bears’ ground game.
A dependable rushing attack would be especially valuable as Morgan State prepares for the considerably more difficult assignment awaiting it next week.
Morgan State Defense Wins the Night
The offense produced the comeback, but Morgan State’s defense deserves enormous credit for giving it the opportunity.
North Carolina A&T quarterback Braxton Thomas completed 20 of 32 passes for 240 yards, but the Bears kept him from throwing a touchdown.
Thomas also carried 10 times for 24 yards and scored the Aggies’ only touchdown.
Morgan State was even better against North Carolina A&T’s traditional running game. JT Smith carried 19 times but managed only 51 yards, an average of 2.7 yards per attempt. Shimique Blizzard added only 13 yards on five carries.
The Aggies had opportunities. They had the football. They accumulated yards.
Morgan State simply refused to let those advantages turn into points.
North Carolina A&T scored seven points in the first quarter and zero over the final three quarters.
That is winning defensive football.
Bears Extend Winning Streak Against Old Rival
Saturday’s victory also carried historical significance.
Morgan State and North Carolina A&T share a lengthy history dating to their years together in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The programs had not played since 2019 before renewing the matchup Saturday night.
Morgan State won that 2019 meeting 22-16 at Hughes Stadium and also captured the previous game in Greensboro, 16-13, in 2018.
Seven years later, the Bears returned to Greensboro and did it again.
This time Morgan State had to overcome a four-point fourth-quarter deficit, silence the Aggies for three consecutive quarters and manufacture enough explosive offense late to escape with the victory.
Up Next: Arizona State
Morgan State will have little time to celebrate.
The Bears travel across the country for one of the biggest challenges on their 2026 schedule when they face Arizona State on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 9 p.m. ET in Tempe, Arizona.
The trip is the second game of a difficult four-game opening stretch. After Arizona State, Morgan State returns home to face Virginia University of Lynchburg on Sept. 12 before traveling to face Towson on Sept. 19.
Morgan State will enter that challenge with something every team wants after Week 1: a 1-0 record.
MSB Take
This was not necessarily a pretty win for Morgan State, but it might have been exactly the kind of win the Bears needed.
Morgan State lost the possession battle, was outgained and spent most of the night playing from behind. None of it mattered when the fourth quarter arrived.
The defense deserves the biggest praise. Holding any opponent scoreless for the final three quarters is impressive, and doing it while North Carolina A&T possessed the ball for nearly 36 minutes makes it even better. The Bears bent without breaking and gave the offense enough opportunities to eventually change the game.
Cameron Edge also passed his first major test. Morgan State named him the starter because of his leadership and consistency during camp. With his team trailing on the road in the fourth quarter, he helped deliver the plays needed to win.
And Jordan Barnett looks like a player Morgan State needs to get the football to throughout the season. Twelve carries, 114 yards and a touchdown is an outstanding debut.
Arizona State will represent an entirely different level of challenge next week. Morgan State will need a cleaner offensive performance and cannot afford to spend three quarters searching for points.
But that is a discussion for next week.
For now, Morgan State walked into Greensboro, held an old rival to seven points and walked out 1-0.
That is a very good way to start the 2026 season.
