Maryland Wrestling Reloads for 2026-27 with 13 Newcomers, Ranked Recruiting Class
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland wrestling is adding a significant influx of talent ahead of the 2026-27 season. Head coach Alex Clemsen announced a 13-member newcomer class featuring eight freshmen and five transfers, giving the Terrapins one of their strongest recruiting hauls in recent years as they look to build on the momentum of a record-setting 2025-26 campaign.
The incoming freshman class has already earned national recognition, ranking No. 25 nationally by InterMat while also receiving an honorable mention from MatScouts. It is Maryland’s second nationally ranked recruiting class since 2021, a sign that the program continues to gain traction under Clemsen.
Freshman Class Brings National Credentials
The Terrapins’ eight freshmen arrive from across the country with impressive high school resumes that include state championships, national tournament experience, and top national rankings. The class is expected to provide depth throughout the lineup while also producing immediate competition for starting positions.
Maryland’s coaching staff emphasized recruiting athletes who fit both the program’s wrestling style and team culture.

During the 2025-26 season, the Terrapins:

- Recorded their highest finish at the Big Ten Championships.
- Earned the most Big Ten dual victories in school history.
- Defeated a top-10 opponent for the first time since 2009.
- Qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships.
- Produced All-American Branson John, who became Maryland’s 22nd All-American.
Those accomplishments have raised expectations entering the upcoming season, and this recruiting class is designed to help sustain that momentum.
Competition Across the Lineup
Returning veterans will still form the core of Maryland’s lineup, but the 13 newcomers should create fierce competition in the wrestling room. Internal competition has long been a hallmark of successful Big Ten programs, and Maryland appears to be embracing that philosophy.
