Final: Maryland 3, Rutgers 2

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Maryland Terrapins women’s soccer team finished its 2026 season on a winning note Friday, October 30, defeating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 3-2 at Yurcak Field. Jolie Farmer scored twice, Mia Mitchell converted a penalty kick, and goalkeeper Faith Luckey delivered a career-high 13 saves to help Maryland secure its second Big Ten Conference victory of the season. The Terrapins built a commanding three-goal advantage before surviving a furious Rutgers comeback in the final 35 minutes.

Maryland finished the season with a 5-10-3 overall record and a 2-8-2 mark in Big Ten competition. Rutgers closed its campaign at 5-8-4 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play. Although the Terrapins struggled throughout conference competition, Friday’s performance demonstrated the team’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and withstand considerable offensive pressure.

Farmer Sparks Maryland’s First-Half Surge

Maryland wasted little time establishing an advantage, with Farmer finding the back of the net just 7:06 into the opening half. The goal gave the Terrapins an early 1-0 lead and immediately forced Rutgers to chase the match. Farmer’s opening strike provided Maryland with an important confidence boost against a conference opponent playing on its home field.

Rutgers responded by generating sustained offensive pressure, but Luckey repeatedly denied the Scarlet Knights. The Maryland goalkeeper recorded several important stops during the opening half, including a stretch of three saves in approximately three minutes. Her performance allowed the Terrapins to maintain their narrow advantage despite Rutgers creating significantly more scoring opportunities.

Maryland doubled its lead in the 39th minute when Mitchell converted a penalty kick at the 38:43 mark. The successful attempt marked Mitchell’s first goal of the season and gave Maryland a 2-0 halftime advantage. Rutgers outshot Maryland 18-9 during the opening 45 minutes, but the Terrapins made their opportunities count.

Farmer Delivers Again as Maryland Builds 3-0 Lead

The Terrapins continued their offensive efficiency early in the second half when Farmer scored her second goal at 51:47. The strike extended Maryland’s advantage to 3-0 and gave Farmer a team-leading six goals for the season. It also marked Maryland’s highest goal total in a Big Ten victory since 2022.

Farmer finished the evening with four shots, two on goal and two goals, converting both of her shots on target. She concluded the 2026 campaign as Maryland’s leading scorer with six goals and also led the team with three assists. Her performance against Rutgers provided an impressive conclusion to her individual season.

However, Rutgers refused to surrender despite facing a three-goal deficit. The Scarlet Knights continued attacking Maryland’s defense, eventually earning a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Lilia Calvert converted the opportunity at 56:25, cutting Maryland’s lead to 3-1 and giving Rutgers renewed momentum.

Rutgers Mounts Late Comeback

The Scarlet Knights continued pressing throughout the second half, forcing Maryland to defend against repeated scoring opportunities. Rutgers finished the contest with 33 shots, including 18 on goal, compared with Maryland’s 11 shots and four on target. The disparity illustrated how heavily the Terrapins relied on their goalkeeping and efficient finishing.

Rutgers narrowed the deficit further in the 82nd minute when Reilly McGlinn scored off an assist from Julia Joseph. The goal came at 81:49 and reduced Maryland’s advantage to 3-2 with slightly more than eight minutes remaining. What initially appeared to be a comfortable Maryland victory suddenly became a tense battle to preserve the result.

Meredith Fisher, who replaced Luckey late in the match, helped protect the advantage during the closing minutes. Fisher recorded three saves in her 11 minutes of action, including critical stops as Rutgers searched for an equalizer. Maryland ultimately held firm and secured its fifth victory of the season.

Faith Luckey Delivers Outstanding Goalkeeping Performance

Luckey’s performance was one of the defining elements of Maryland’s victory. The goalkeeper recorded a career-high 13 saves in 79 minutes while allowing just one goal before leaving the contest. Her ability to repeatedly stop Rutgers attacks gave Maryland the opportunity to build its early advantage.

The Terrapins’ two goalkeepers combined for 16 saves, an impressive total against a Rutgers offense that generated 33 shots. Luckey earned her ninth career victory and finished the season with 84 saves in 23 career appearances, according to Maryland Athletics. Her contributions were particularly important during a first half in which Rutgers consistently tested Maryland’s defense.

Maryland also received contributions from several players who provided stability throughout the season. McKinley Heaven finished as the team’s leader with 35 shots, while Farmer led the offense in goals and assists. The Terrapins also had seven players appear in all 18 matches during the 2026 campaign.

Maryland Evens All-Time Series Against Rutgers

Friday’s contest marked the 20th meeting between Maryland and Rutgers in women’s soccer. With the victory, the Terrapins evened the all-time series at 8-8-4. The result provided Maryland with another conference victory and a positive conclusion to a difficult season.

The win also represented Maryland’s first three-goal performance in a Big Ten victory since 2022. Despite producing only four shots on goal, the Terrapins converted three of those opportunities, demonstrating remarkable finishing efficiency. That offensive execution ultimately proved decisive against a Rutgers team that controlled much of the match statistically.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Maryland’s 2026 women’s soccer season was certainly challenging, particularly against Big Ten competition, but the victory over Rutgers demonstrated several encouraging qualities. Farmer showed why she was Maryland’s most productive offensive player, while Luckey delivered the kind of goalkeeping performance capable of keeping a team competitive against relentless pressure. Winning a conference road match despite being outshot 33-11 is an accomplishment, although it also highlights areas requiring improvement.

The biggest priority moving forward should be creating more consistent offensive possession and reducing the number of scoring chances opponents generate. Maryland cannot expect its goalkeepers to face 18 shots on target regularly and consistently produce victories. Building a stronger midfield, improving defensive organization and developing additional scoring threats will be important steps toward becoming more competitive in the Big Ten.

Still, there is something meaningful about ending a difficult season with a victory. Maryland’s players continued battling despite their conference struggles and delivered one of their most memorable results of the year. Farmer’s two-goal performance and Luckey’s outstanding night provided the Terrapins with a positive foundation heading into the offseason.
